We’re embarking on a journey that will give us a completely different perspective on Łódź and its fascinating surroundings, you know? Forget for a moment about walking the streets or visiting museums at ground level. Today, we’re taking you up – to Łódź’s viewing terraces, city hills and towers in the immediate vicinity, because there really is something to see. We will see the panorama of the city, appreciate the beauty of the surrounding nature and discover places that are normally hidden from our sight. Are you ready for a new scenic adventure?

The best views of the Łódź skyline

Łódź is a city that is not immediately associated with viewpoints, at least for me. After all, we don’t have mountain peaks or high cliffs here, do we? However, this city of industry and factories hides places whose panorama can take your breath away, seriously. It’s the perfect opportunity to see how history intertwines with the modern day and how the city’s green lungs encroach on the urban jungle. We’ve put together a list of places from which you can see Łódź in all its glory, well, just great.

From the EC1 terrace – the heart of the city in the palm of your hand

Perhaps the most famous vantage point in Łódź? It is located at the top of the huge cooling tower in the EC1 complex. This place has become famous in recent years, among other things, thanks to the recording of a video for the song Męskie Granie Orkiestra 2021, where the second verse was performed by Daria Zawiałow – which was, by the way, a really brilliant move. From this extraordinary terrace, you can observe the vibrant Piotrkowska Street, the impressive Downtown Residential District, known as Łódź’s Manhattan, as well as sprawling housing estates such as Widzew and Retkinia. The view from here shows the urban landscape of the city, with its contrasts and scale, giving a real sense that we have the heart of Lodz on our hands, or at least a good chunk of it.

Manufaktura: history and modernity in one frame

Manufaktura is not just a shopping and entertainment centre, of course. It is also a magnificently restored example of Łódź’s industrial heritage. It houses the Factory Museum, which tells the history of the place in a very accessible way (really worth a visit!). Importantly for view-seekers, the Factory Museum also has its own viewing terrace. Although it may not offer such an expansive panorama as EC1, it allows you to look at the Manufaktura complex itself from above, see the architectural details of the former Izrael Poznanski factory and see how modern life fits into the historical fabric of this unusual place. It’s a view that any lover of post-industrial architecture will appreciate – it’s probably my favourite part.

SkyFLY Bar: a cocktail with a view of Łódź skyscrapers

If you dream of admiring Lodz’s skyline in a more luxurious setting, be sure to visit SkyFLY Bar. This elegant bar is located on the top floor of the hotel on Ogrodowa Street. This hotel, itself an icon of modern architecture blended into the historic walls, offers a stunning view of Lodz’s skyscrapers and the dynamically changing skyline of the city centre from its viewing terrace. It’s the perfect place for an evening out, where you can soak up the city’s atmosphere from above over a delicious cocktail – although, frankly, the prices can be as high as the view.

From PURO Hotel – Lodz’s architectural gems

Another place offering a unique perspective on the city, and quite a bit of it, is the PURO Łódź hotel. This stylish hotel has a panoramic terrace that overlooks some of Lodz’s most beautiful architectural gems. From here you can admire the majestic Poznański Palace and spot the distinctive silhouette of the former factory spinning mill. From the terrace of the PURO Hotel, you can also see the towers of the Old Town church and the extensive buildings of Bałuty, which gives you a fuller picture of the diversity of Lodz’s buildings, simply superb. It’s a great spot to photograph the architectural contrasts of Lodz, you know, those old bricks next to modern glass.

The hills of Łódź – discovering hidden viewpoints

Łódź, although it appears flat, hides several hills, both natural, being part of the Lodz Hills, and artificially mounded, which not many people know about. Although they are not impressive peaks, they offer interesting local vantage points, often surrounded by greenery and tranquillity, allowing you to see the city and the surrounding countryside from a slightly different perspective. Exploring these places is a great opportunity to walk and spend time in nature without going far outside the city limits. In fact, it is often surprising how much greenery can be found so close to the city centre.

Rudzka Góra: the power of industry and the beauty of landscape

Rudzka Góra is an artificially raised hill in the southern part of Łódź, in the district of Ruda Pabianicka. Although it is only 230 m above sea level, it is a popular place for recreation and sport, and there is an interesting view from the top. From here we can see the buildings of neighbouring towns such as Pabianice and Rzgów. Intriguingly, if the weather conditions are right, you can even see the distant chimneys of the Belchatow Power Plant from Rudzka Góra – who would have thought! This is a reminder of the industrial might of the region, contrasting picturesquely with the surrounding nature, which is quite amazing.

Górka rogowska: forest, city and a bit of magic

In the north-eastern part of Łódź, in settlements such as Stoki, Rogi and Wzniesienie Łódzkie, we can find several viewpoints on natural hills. One of them is Górka Rogowska, 244 m above sea level, located in Łupkowa Street. From here, there is a beautiful view of the vast Łagiewnicki Forest, the green lungs of Łódź, simply beautiful. From here we can also see the northern part of the city and the southern part of neighbouring Zgierz. The combination of the view of the forest and the urban landscape adds a somewhat magical, idyllic charm to the place, despite its proximity to the city – at least that’s how I feel.

A viewing hill: trams and the Lodz skyline in the background

Another hill worth noting is Lookout Mountain on Stoki, off Zbójnicka Street. It is one of the highest natural hills in the area (259 m above sea level, although the highest Hill of Radars is 284 m above sea level, but it is wooded and has a relay station, so it does not serve as a vantage point – a pity, isn’t it?). From the Lookout Mountain we can enjoy an impressive panorama of the centre of Łódź, and an interesting feature is the view of the tram depot from where the Łódź trams leave, adding an urban touch to the landscape. It’s fun to watch them set off into the city.

Retkinska Górka: green tranquillity and a view of Retkinia

In the west of the city, in the Retkinia residential area, you will find an artificial hill called Górka Retkińska (196 m above sea level) in Colonel Juszczakiewicza street. From this place, there is a pleasant view of the nearby Botanical Garden, which is an oasis of green in the urban space, such a nice touch. From here we can also look at the buildings of Retkinia itself and parts of Konstantynowska Street and the Brus area. This is a good point to see what life is like in one of the largest housing estates in Łódź, surrounded by greenery.

Outside Łódź – viewpoints in the surroundings

The Łódź region is not only Łódź itself, of course, although it is the heart of the region. There are also many interesting towns and places which offer their own unique viewpoints. It’s worth venturing a little further afield to discover what picturesque landscapes the region hides, as it really can surprise you. A castle, a church tower or even an artificial hill after a mine can become our destination to see the area from a new perspective.

St. Catherine’s Tower in Zgierz: the charm of times gone by

Not far from Łódź is Zgierz, a town with history. It is well worth visiting St Catherine’s Church, which has a viewing tower as long as it is open to the public. Climbing it gives you the opportunity to observe the panorama of Zgierz – a city with a rich history, with old buildings preserved in many places. It is an opportunity to feel the charm of the old times and see the urban layout of this charming town from above, which always gives an interesting perspective.

The castle in Łęczyca: history and extensive panorama

In Łęczyca, the castle awaits us, which is a historical attraction in itself, well, and a super place to visit. What’s more, from its observation tower we can enjoy an extensive panorama of the area. Apart from the view of Łęczyca itself and its monuments, from the castle you can also observe the Warsaw-Berlin Proglacial Valley, a huge area formed by glacial processes, which is quite fascinating. It is a sight that combines the history of the city with the geological history of the region. In Łęczyca, you will also find another viewpoint – a former post-mining heap near the City Lagoon, which also offers an interesting perspective on the area.

Kamieńska Mountain: a giant pit and views of Częstochowa?

About 70-80 km from Łódź, near Belchatow, is the Viewing Terrace of the Lignite Mine, right on the border of one of the largest pits in Europe – the view is, well, impressive and terrifying at the same time. But that’s not the only attraction in the area. From the mine’s external spoil heap, an artificial hill was built up – Kamieńska Mountain, 405 metres above sea level, which makes it the highest point in the whole Łódzkie Voivodeship (although the highest natural peak in the Łódzkie Voivodeship is Fajna Ryba, which, however, does not function as a viewpoint due to its forest cover). From the top of Kamieńska Mountain, we can observe not only the impressive power plant in Bełchatów, but, with good visibility, also the buildings of Częstochowa, some 50 km away! It is a view that makes you realise the scale of the industry and the vastness of the landscape, really worth the journey.

Chelmo mountain: Jurassic charm and peaceful relaxation

Slightly further south, in the vicinity of Radomsko, there is a natural elevation – Góra Chełmo (323 m above sea level). From here, we can see the hills of the Krakow-Częstochowa Upland, which gives the landscape its Jurassic charm. It is a vantage point that offers a quieter, more idyllic perspective on the surrounding nature and hilly terrain, a very pleasant place. I remember, during one of our journeys through the Lodz Voivodship, visiting it by car, we stayed overnight in Radomsko, which fell on the first day between Piotrków Trybunalski and Załęczański Landscape Park, which was a very convenient logistical solution and we could move on easily the next day.

Viewing towers on Lake Jeziorsko: nature in its full glory

Nature and birdwatching enthusiasts should head for the Jeziorsko Reservoir, some 70 km from Łódź. There are two observation towers there – one in Glinna and one in Proboszczewice. They provide an excellent opportunity to observe the Jeziorsko Nature Reserve, one of the most important wetland bird habitats in Poland. The view of the vast water surface, reed beds and flying birds is a real feast for the eyes and the soul, showing nature in its full glory, something you will not experience in the city.

Attractions in Lodz – more than just scenic spots

The Łódź region is an extremely diverse region, offering much more than just scenic viewpoints, although these are a great start. When planning a trip, it is worth taking into account other attractions which will allow you to fully feel the atmosphere of the place. Unlike some regions of Poland, such as Małopolska or Lower Silesia, which are mainly associated with mountains or castles, Łódzkie offers a unique combination of industrial heritage, charming nature and interesting places with history, which makes it unique.

A walk along Piotrkowska Street: the history of Łódź at your fingertips

A must for any visit to Lodz is a walk down the city’s most famous street – Piotrkowska Street. It is here that the heart of Łódź beats, here you can admire magnificent tenement houses, palaces, factory owners’ mansions and feel the atmosphere of the old, multicultural Łódź. Piotrkowska is the living history of the city at your fingertips, full of cafes, restaurants and shops, there is always something happening there.

The Factory Museum: a journey back in time in the heart of the manufactory

As we have already mentioned, the Factory Museum in Manufaktura is a place worth visiting, not only because of the viewing terrace. The museum takes us back to the glory days of the Łódź textile industry, telling the story of Israel Poznański’s factory, which is insanely interesting. It’s a fascinating journey back in time, which helps you understand how the industrial powerhouse of Łódź was born and developed, where weaving developed on a huge scale, just like in nearby Pabianice, where the Weaver’s House has been preserved to this day – you can see how history intertwines.

Excursion to Zgierz and surroundings: a charming town with history

Apart from the observation tower of St Catherine’s Church, Zgierz is a charming town in itself, ideal for a short trip, especially if you have little time. Its market square and streets have retained much of their former character. Not far from Zgierz, there are also hills that are part of the Lodz Hills, for example in the vicinity of Plichtow, Teolin or Janow, which can also be interesting points to observe the landscape, although perhaps not formal, marked viewpoints.

Visiting Łęczyca: medieval ambience and picturesque views

Łęczyca is a town with a deep-rooted history that is worth visiting not only for the view from the castle or from the post-mining heap near the City Reservoir, which is quite unusual as a vantage point. The castle itself in Łęczyca, a former castle, is a fascinating place, full of legends about the Devil Boruta. Not far from Łęczyca, in Tuma, is the magnificent Łęczyca Archdiocese, a pearl of Romanesque architecture from the 12th century, lying on the Romanesque Route, an absolute must-see for history and architecture lovers. A visit to Łęczyca is a real journey into the medieval atmosphere, complete with picturesque views.

Łódzkie Voivodeship, I must admit, is also a region that can surprise you with the number of interesting places. There are many other places worth visiting that are not often mentioned.

• Ruins of castles and defensive manors, such as the castle in Oporów (which houses the Oporów Castle Museum, well preserved!), the castle in Uniejów, built by the will of the archbishops of Gniezno over the Warta valley, the ruins of the castle in Besiekiery (unfortunately not open to the public, which is a bit sad), or the ruins of the defensive manor in Majkowice, built as a defensive residence of the Majkowski family, destroyed in 1702 by the Swedish army (quite a turbulent history!). The Majkowice castle, consisting of a gatehouse, a small northern building, a courtyard and a dwelling house with a tower, is today home to storks, which have a nest on the remains of the walls – a beautiful symbol of the return of life. The ruins of a defensive manor house in Bąkowa Góra (Piotrków county, Ręczno municipality, near Przygłów and Przedborze), erected in the mid-15th century thanks to Zbigniew Bąk (of Zadora coat of arms, belonging to the entourage of King Władysław Jagiełło), which, after his death, passed into the hands of Jarosław Łaski and Piotr and Andrzej from Bnin, and in the 16th century became the property of the Małachowski family (hence it is sometimes called Małachowski Manor) and in the 20th century of the Potocki family, can also only be viewed from the outside, which is somewhat limiting.
• Palaces, such as the palace in Nieborów in the Łódzkie Voivodeship, designed by Tylman of Gameren, are a reminder of the Radziwiłłs, with beautiful gardens. The nearby park at Arkadia is also worth a visit – a perfect place for a stroll.
• There are also interesting places connected with industry and technology, such as the interactive museum in Bełchatów, telling the story of energy and coal, or the open-air museum of locomotives in Karsznice. Łódź is, after all, associated with monuments of technology, it is its essence.
• Nature attractions such as the Bolimowski Landscape Park with the Bolimowska Forest, the Snake Nature Reserve or the Blue Springs Nature Reserve in Tomaszów Mazowiecki (something amazing!). In Załęczański Landscape Park you will find many beautiful places, such as St. Genevieve Mountain, Frog Pond, Ewa Cave or Pomegranate Springs. In the Spalski Landscape Park, near Spala, Saint Hubert’s Grotto and Pine on Stilts await us – sounds mysterious, doesn’t it?
• Unique geological objects, such as the Mszczonowski Boulder in Zawady, located by the expressway, on the border of the Łódź and Mazowieckie Voivodeships. To reach it from the S8, you have to turn towards Skierniewice or Biała Rawska (road 70), so you need to bear this in mind when planning your journey. It is one of the largest erratic boulders in Poland (second largest, after Trygława in the municipality of Tychowo, in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship), and the largest in Mazovia (it is 12×8.5×3 metres), uprooted by a glacier in some ancient times. It was used for building purposes in the interwar period, interestingly enough.
• Other interesting places include Wiatrakowa Góra – a viewpoint in Działoszyń, the Revelation Spring in Kałuża (what’s in a name?), Żeleźnica – the site of an accident by Casimir the Great (history in a nutshell), or the Mandoria amusement park in Rzgów, an attraction in the Łódzkie Voivodeship. It is also worth visiting Łowicz with its triangular Old Market Square and nearby attractions such as the Primate’s Gate, the Cathedral and the Łowicz Museum. Not far from Wieluń, in Gaszyn, is the charming Church of the Holy Name of the Virgin Mary of Grace, founded by the Gaszynski family. In Lipce Reymontowskie, we can visit a museum devoted to the culture of local peasants, which was the inspiration for Władysław Reymont’s novel “Chłopi” (Peasants); it is a must-see for lovers of literature and ethnography.

Planning a trip around Łódź’s landmarks – where to start?

To fully enjoy discovering Łódź’s viewpoints, it is worth planning your trip well, seriously. The Łódź region has a lot to offer, and proper preparation will allow you to see as much as possible and fully appreciate the beauty of the region – after all, that’s what travelling is all about. Our experience shows that travelling in this area is pleasant and trouble-free, although something unforeseen can always happen, you know.

Choosing the perfect spot – tailor-made for your individual needs

Choosing a viewpoint, as in life, depends on your preferences. If you’re looking for an urban panorama from a high floor, go for EC1, Manufaktura, SkyFLY Bar or the PURO Hotel. If you prefer to combine views with outdoor activities, Rudzka Góra, Rogowska Hill or View Mountain will be a great choice – you can walk a bit, move around. And if you dream of views of nature and quiet relaxation outside the city, Jeziorsko, Góra Chełmo or the Łęczyca area will provide you with an unforgettable experience, simply something beautiful. Remember also the other attractions of the region that can be included in your plan, from nature reserves and scenic parks to monuments and museums – the possibilities are immense.

Practical tips and advice for tourists

When planning a trip to Lodz’s viewpoints, there are a few practical things to keep in mind, it always helps. The availability of some viewing terraces may be limited by opening hours (e.g. EC1, the Factory Museum, bars in hotels), so always check the up-to-date information before visiting to avoid disappointment. Urban hills are often easiest to reach by car or public transport with transfers, while those further away from Lodz usually require your own transport, unless you like long bike rides. We, travelling with a child, had no problems finding accommodation in the Łódzkie Voivodeship, and the accommodation on offer is really varied, from hotels to guest houses and even agrotourism. As a friend of mine who loves Łódź used to say: “You will always find something, you just have to look for it”.

Accessibility of viewpoints – information for people with disabilities

Unfortunately, not all viewpoints are fully accessible for people with mobility impairments, and this is important information. The terraces at the top of buildings in the centre of Łódź (EC1, Manufaktura, hotels) are usually accessible via lifts, which is great. However, urban and suburban hills can be challenging due to the terrain and lack of specially prepared paths, it can be difficult there. Out-of-town lookout towers, such as those on Jeziorskie or in Zgierz, often require climbing a lot of stairs, which can be a hindrance. It is always a good idea to check the accessibility of a particular site in advance, if it is important to you, to avoid disappointment.

The best times of year to enjoy Lodz’s sights

The time of year, as you might guess, has a big impact on the quality of the views. The best visibility tends to be in early spring and autumn, after rain, when the air is clear – the perfect time to see those distant chimneys. Summer can be beautiful because of the greenery, but the heat and associated haze can limit the range of vision, especially from higher vantage points from where distant objects can be seen. Winter offers rugged but often very clear views, although the accessibility of some sites, such as nature towers, can be limited, due to weather or icy conditions. But each season nevertheless has its own charm and allows you to see the landscape of the Lodz region in a different light, so there’s no bad time to explore.

Łódź and its surroundings – plan your adventure
