A natural wonder in the heart of Kujawy: Inowrocław’s brine

Inowrocław, located in the picturesque Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship, on the Inowrocław Plain, has for centuries drawn upon nature’s bounty – its healing brines and therapeutic mud (borowina). It’s no wonder that the town earned the nickname “City on Salt” and became a prized spa town. Wondering what brine graduation towers help with? They primarily support the respiratory and circulatory systems. The history of using the local brine waters here is truly long and fascinating. As early as 1450, the chancellery of King Casimir Jagiellon issued a document confirming the health benefits of Inowrocław’s water. And interestingly, legends even mention the healing of infertility in Princess Judyta, wife of Władysław Herman (and mother of Bolesław III Wrymouth), precisely thanks to the miraculous water from these lands. A real breakthrough in the development of the spa occurred much later, in 1886, when the treatment of rheumatic diseases in children was initiated. This was, in a way, an important step in the town’s history as a therapeutic place.

Inowrocław – a town famous for healing brines and a long history

The history of Inowrocław as a spa town runs really deep. Healing brines and therapeutic mud are gifts from nature that have supported the health of both residents and visitors for generations. You already know what a brine graduation tower is and how it works, but where exactly is it located in Inowrocław? In Solankowy Park. Archaeological research, conducted by scientists from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in the area of present-day Inowrocław, uncovered something extraordinary – the existence of structures resembling modern graduation towers as early as the Roman period, between the 2nd and 4th centuries! The discovered remains are reportedly the oldest such objects found in Europe, which strongly testifies to the extraordinarily long tradition of using brine in this region. Today, however, Inowrocław is not just about history. It is also a city recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as having some of the cleanest air in Poland. What’s more, this fact further enhances its health benefits, especially of course near the graduation towers.

Solankowy Park – the green heart of the spa, an oasis of calm

The heart of the Inowrocław spa beats in the picturesque Solankowy Park. It is here that the famous brine graduation towers are located, dominating the landscape. However, Solankowy Park is much more than just the graduation tower. It is a vast, green area, situated in the western part of Inowrocław, which in itself constitutes an oasis of relaxation and health. It boasts a specific microclimate, determined by the brine-rich areas, which is conducive to regeneration and rest. Here you will find numerous spa facilities, walking paths, and a whole range of attractions that make the time spent in Solankowy Park worthwhile for everyone, regardless of age or interests. Or, to put it another way, everyone will find something for themselves there.

Health and relaxation in one place: the brine graduation tower in practice

The Inowrocław brine graduation tower is, in my opinion, a perfect combination of natural therapy and opportunities for active or passive leisure. Being near the brine graduation towers can be compared to a trip to the seaside, but it happens in the very heart of the country. The brine aerosol created there, rich in valuable microelements, has a confirmed, beneficial effect on our health. Around the Inowrocław brine graduation tower, there is a unique microclimate, created by the evaporating brine and wind. It is particularly recommended for people struggling with respiratory or circulatory system diseases. But not only! Even healthy people will feel the difference and strengthen their immunity by using this natural inhalation. In fact, prevention is just as important as treatment here.

How does brine aerosol affect your health?

Brine aerosol, which is a suspension of fine brine droplets in the air, is created in the graduation towers thanks to air movement and the sun. It is precisely this that is the key to the healing properties of the graduation tower. Inhalations with such air are particularly indicated for people with chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma or COPD. The aerosol helps clear the airways, makes coughing up easier, and alleviates inflammation. What’s more, being near a brine graduation tower has a beneficial effect on high blood pressure and helps with states of general body exhaustion. It is a natural therapy that supports our body in fighting various ailments and helps strengthen immunity. But let’s remember that this is support, not a miracle cure-all.

Inhalation therapy – what to do at the graduation tower?

Therapy at the Inowrocław brine graduation tower is extremely simple and, importantly, pleasant. It simply involves walking along the structure of the graduation tower, breathing deeply the air saturated with brine. You can do this by relaxing on benches near the tower or actively walking around. The closer to the walls filled with blackthorn brushwood, down which the brine flows, the higher the concentration of the aerosol. Although the duration of inhalation is worth consulting with your doctor, even a short walk in this place will bring relief and refreshment. It is proof of how simple and natural methods can effectively support our health and well-being, even if we don’t have much time.

Indications and contraindications – who is the graduation tower for?

Inhalations with brine aerosol are recommended for a range of ailments and conditions. The main indications for using the graduation towers include: respiratory system diseases (chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, laryngitis, asthma), high blood pressure, states of general body exhaustion, and the need to boost immunity. A visit to Inowrocław, including Solankowy Park and the graduation tower, is particularly recommended for people with respiratory or circulatory system diseases. Although graduation towers help the sick and strengthen the immunity of the healthy, it is always worth consulting a doctor, especially in the case of serious conditions, to ensure that this form of therapy is suitable for you. It should be remembered that using the graduation tower is a natural complementary method, not a replacement for medical treatment, which is perhaps quite obvious, but always worth highlighting.

Architecture and history of the Inowrocław graduation tower – how was it built?

brine_graduation_tower_in_inowrocław

The Inowrocław brine graduation tower is not only a therapeutic facility but also an impressive structure with unique architecture. Its history is not as long as the history of the spa itself, but it is closely linked to its development in more recent times. The idea of creating a graduation tower in Inowrocław appeared in the second half of the 20th century, in 1984. Its construction began ten years later, in 1994. Opened in 2001, the graduation tower quickly became a symbol of the city and a key element of Solankowy Park. In April 2020, the facility underwent a thorough refurbishment, which testifies to the care taken for its condition and functionality for visitors. Because good technical condition is fundamental, isn’t it?

The unique construction of the brine graduation tower – what distinguishes it?

The graduation tower in Inowrocław impresses with its form. It has the shape of two connected polygons, which gives it a modern and interesting appearance. Its circumference is an impressive 322 metres, and its height reaches 9 metres. Such dimensions allow for easy walks around the structure and benefiting from the aerosol. At the top of the graduation tower, there is a viewing platform, offering a beautiful panorama of the entire Solankowy Park and parts of the city. Admiring the panorama from the viewing platform at the top of the graduation tower is, as a guide friend of mine puts it, “a view that heals the eyes.” It allows you to appreciate the scale of the green oasis in the heart of Inowrocław, even though reaching the top might require climbing a few steps.

Construction and materials – the secret of blackthorn brushwood and brine

The principle of operation of the Inowrocław graduation tower is based on the circulation of brine and the use of natural materials. The brine, pumped to the top of the structure, flows freely down the walls filled with blackthorn brushwood. The blackthorn brushwood, made of wood, disperses the brine, which significantly increases the evaporation surface. Wind and sun cause intensive evaporation of the brine, creating a dense suspension of beneficial salt aerosol in the air. This is a simple but extremely effective method of natural inhalation, which works continuously as long as the brine is circulating in the system and suitable atmospheric conditions prevail. The brine flows down the blackthorn brushwood, creating a “salty” waterfall, which, if you’re ready for a slight salting of your skin, can be admired up close.

History of the graduation tower – from idea to realisation

The history of the Inowrocław graduation towers dates back to the second half of the 20th century. In 1984, the concept of building a graduation tower was born, which was intended to enrich the spa’s offering and create a unique microclimate. The implementation of this ambitious project began in 1994. Work lasted several years, and the grand opening and putting the facility into use took place in 2001. Since then, the brine graduation tower in Inowrocław has been continuously serving residents and tourists, becoming one of the most important points on the map of Polish spa facilities. Its significance is underlined by the fact that in 2014 it was the winner of the “7 New Wonders of Poland” competition, announced by National Geographic. Because isn’t it a little wonder?

Solankowy Park – attractions for the whole family

As we’ve already mentioned, Solankowy Park is a place where absolutely everyone will find something for themselves. Regardless of whether you come to Inowrocław for treatment or simply for a weekend trip, a host of possibilities await you for spending time. The park is huge and diverse, skillfully combining natural beauty with modern amenities. The recreational areas feature attractions that will satisfy both those seeking peace and those who prefer active outdoor leisure. Isn’t that a perfect combination?

Walking among the greenery and relaxing by the pond

The green avenues of Solankowy Park practically invite leisurely strolls. You can discover the beautiful Gardens of Scent and Colour, created in 2012, where flowerbeds full of peonies and lilies delight with colour and scent, and specially prepared herb beds serve for aromatherapy. Interestingly, information about the herbs is provided in Braille, making the gardens accessible to visually impaired people – a great idea! Following the example of the Vatican Gardens, Papal Gardens have also been created in the park. For those who are looking for coolness and relaxation by the water, the ideal spot is the ‘Solanki’ recreational area with a beach by the pond. There you can relax or organise a picnic with a barbecue. These are ideal places to breathe deeply and simply enjoy nature.

Active leisure – cycling paths and Nordic walking

If you prefer a more active form of relaxation, Solankowy Park won’t disappoint you either. Here you will find perfectly marked cycling paths and Nordic walking trails that lead through the most beautiful corners of the park. It’s a great option to combine outdoor activity with admiring nature and simultaneously benefiting from the microclimate here. You can set off on a longer trip or simply do a few laps around the graduation tower, enjoying every step and every breath. But you have to admit, on a hot day, such a walk can be tiring!

Fun for the little ones – playgrounds and rope park

Solankowy Park is a real paradise for children! The entire area near the graduation tower is excellently developed in terms of recreation, especially with the youngest tourists in mind. In addition to a spacious playground where the little ones can run around and burn off energy, older children (and adults, why not?!) can try their hand at the rope park. The recreational areas of Solankowy Park also offer a range of other attractions that will satisfy the needs of active people:

  • Outdoor gym for adults,
  • Street workout stations,
  • Sports fields,
  • Mini golf,
  • Tennis courts,
  • Bowling alley,
  • Chess tables.

In the park, you’ll also find mini golf and a mini rope park for younger children, and an outdoor gym for adults. It’s clear that the park’s creators made sure that every family member, regardless of age, would find something for themselves and could spend time actively or having fun. In fact, it’s hard to get bored here!

Inowrocław – more than just the graduation tower

Although the brine graduation tower in Inowrocław is the city’s calling card, Inowrocław has much more to offer. We are focusing on this large, public graduation tower, but it is worth knowing that there are also home graduation towers, allowing you to benefit from brine in your own home. It is a city with a rich history, interesting historical monuments, and a vibrant cultural life. Located on the Piast Trail, Inowrocław invites you to discover traces of the past and take advantage of the wide range of spa and entertainment options. The western part of the city, where Solankowy Park is located, forms the centre of the spa complex, but it’s worth stepping outside its borders and getting to know other faces of Inowrocław. Because just walking around the park isn’t everything.

Historical Monuments of Inowrocław – traces of history and architecture

Inowrocław is a city with over 800 years of history, and a walk through its streets is a real journey through time. We can see fragments of the medieval defensive walls and numerous sacred monuments. The oldest church in Inowrocław is the Romanesque Minor Basilica of the Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, colloquially known as “the ruin”. Although its form is more modest today than originally, priceless, unique bas-reliefs and engravings have been preserved on its exterior walls. Inside the basilica, you can admire a beautiful, wooden, Gothic figure of the Smiling Madonna with the Child Jesus. Another important sacred monument is the late-Gothic parish church dedicated to St Nicholas, also included on the Piast Trail. This is a three-nave church that has been rebuilt many times, but its history is impressive. In Inowrocław, we will also find many historic houses of historical significance, dating mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, which create a unique atmosphere, e.g., the building at Kościuszki Street 19, standing on the site of the medieval weigh house, where a Gothic two-chamber cellar has been preserved. Or the house at Klasztorny Square 6, the oldest building preserved in its entirety in Inowrocław, which formerly housed the seat of the district office and subsequently the People’s Bank. The grand Solankowa Street will charm spa guests with the diversity of its tenement architecture, and Królowej Jadwigi Street, formerly called “Królówka”, still bustles with social and commercial life today. Although some buildings require renovation, their history is palpable.

Inowrocław Spa – a wide range of therapeutic treatments

The Inowrocław spa offers a truly wide range of therapeutic treatments, aimed at people with various ailments. The main therapeutic profiles include: orthopaedics, neurology, rheumatology (treated since 1886), cardiology, angiology, laryngology, gastroenterology, diabetology, as well as the treatment of obesity and osteoporosis. The spa effectively treats circulatory system ailments, musculoskeletal and motor system disorders, as well as respiratory tract diseases and metabolic disorders. Rehabilitation after strokes is also conducted. The spa complex, grouped in the western part of Inowrocław and including, among others, Solankowy Park, the Natural Medicine Centre, the spa graduation tower (which is our brine graduation tower), the Watering Hall and Palm House, and the “Inowrocławska Thermae” swimming pool, provides everything necessary for comprehensive therapy and regeneration. You can try the local mineral waters, Inowrocławianka and Jadwiga, originating from Inowrocław’s boreholes, e.g., in the Watering Hall, where there’s also a monument to the mother-in-law – an interesting subject for a souvenir photo (yes, really!).

Events and Cultural Happenings – Inowrocław buzzes with life

Inowrocław is not only about health and relaxation but also culture. The spa park is a venue for regular artistic events that attract both residents and tourists. In summer, concerts in the Summer Theatre and the bandstand are particularly popular. The events calendar is full of various happenings, such as the National Festival of Youth Brass Bands, the Artistic Review of Choirs from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship “Spring in Solanki”, Musical Summer at the Graduation Tower, Inowrocław Brine Night, Inowrocław Musical Summer, and the Inowrocław Opera and Operetta Gala. The city also hosts well-known figures from the world of science, culture, and sport, whose visits are commemorated in the Avenue of Oaks, located near the graduation tower – each tree planted symbolises the visit of a famous personality. Isn’t that an interesting way to commemorate it?
