PTTK mountain hostel in St. Catherine – a comprehensive guide
June 28, 2025
We invite you on an unforgettable journey to the very heart of the magical Świętokrzyskie Mountains, to a place where history intertwines with extraordinary nature – the PTTK Hostel in Św. Katarzyna. When planning a trip, we often think about where we will spend our time in a way that is both active and conducive to true relaxation. Christmas decorations, or those everyday decorations that give character to our homes, obviously have their importance, but it is here, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, that we find an atmosphere that can really captivate. Before Christmas, many people think about Christmas cleaning, preparing wishes or sending a Christmas card, but the tranquillity of the mountains is another form of relaxation.
Do you even know what day it is today, or what holiday we are celebrating? Do you wonder what holiday is being celebrated on the calendar today, or what day it is today? It may be an ordinary weekday, or perhaps some unusual holiday, or even an important church holiday, Catholic or Orthodox. Whether it’s a weekday, a day off, or perhaps Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or Grandparent’s Day, in this enchanting area it no longer matters, because every day spent on the trail or over tea in a chalet seems a small holiday in itself. So get ready for a large dose of practical information, but also a handful of inspirations that I hope will convince you to visit this truly unique spot on the map of the Świętokrzyskie region. Wondering which day would be perfect for such an outing? (Personally, I think any!). Either way, the mountains are waiting, regardless of the date on your calendar. You can think about small Christmas decorations if you fall into this magical period, but remember that it is above all the preparation for an unforgettable experience that is key. This chalet, in a sense, is a true shrine to mountain hikers in the region. Occasionally a roadside shrine can be found in the area.
Location and access to the chalet

Situated at the very foot of Łysica, which is, after all, the highest peak of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, the PTTK mountain hostel in Św. Katarzyna is located in the charming eponymous village. This location makes it an ideal starting point for all kinds of hikes in the most interesting parts of the region. It is a real tourist spot on the map of the region. In fact, there are several ways to get there – it all depends on your personal preferences and, of course, your means of transport.
How do you get to St Catherine’s on foot?
For a large group of hikers, especially those who value walking and being close to nature above all else, the most beautiful and perhaps the only right way to reach the PTTK mountain hostel is simply to walk along one of the available trails. The best known, and at the same time the shortest variant, leads straight from the centre of the village of Święta Katarzyna. This is the red trail named after Edmund Massalski, which then continues all the way to Łysica itself. The path itself is, fortunately, well signposted and shouldn’t cause any major difficulties; it’s just right for a warm-up before a more ambitious climb up the mountain. But you know what (small digression, I once followed a similar trail on Kudłacze and it was surprisingly easy too!) This hostel can also be reached by other paths that connect St Catherine with other points in the Świętokrzyskie region, which opens up the possibility of planning a much longer and more varied hiking route.
Access by car and parking in the area
On the other hand, if you prefer a more comfortable journey by car, getting to Swieta Katarzyna is really easy. The village is located just off provincial road number 752, which makes it easy to navigate. Directly in Swieta Katarzyna itself, you will find several parking options where you can leave your vehicle without much worry. The one closest to the beginning of the trails leading to the mountain hostel and to Łysica is a large car park, paid for, but the walk from there to the mountain hostel takes barely a dozen minutes. Remember, however, that during the so-called “hot” periods, i.e. during the tourist season, as well as on weekends and public holidays, these car parks can be, shall we say, quite crowded.
Public transport to the hostel – is it possible?
Well, yes, getting to St Catherine’s using public transport is entirely possible, although… it probably requires a bit more planning on your part. There are buses to the village, mainly those departing from Kielce. As is often the case, it is worth checking the timetables some time in advance as they can vary depending on the day of the week and, of course, the time of year. From the bus stop, which is in the centre of the village, it is not far to the hostel, so you can easily get there on foot. And although public transport will not take you literally to the doorstep of the hut, it is a more environmentally-friendly and, after all, convenient option for those who, for various reasons, do not travel by car. The area is the heart of the Kielce region.
The hostel – infrastructure and facilities

Although the PTTK Hostel on St. Catherine bears the mark of years gone by, I must admit that it offers tourists basically everything necessary for a comfortable rest after a day spent actively on the trail. It is, I would say, a tourist hostel in flesh and blood, ready to welcome both lone hikers and large organised groups. Importantly, the infrastructure is being successively modernised in an attempt to meet modern standards, while at the same time, and this is something I value, retaining that specific, unique mountain atmosphere. You can see that the Polish Tourist Society really cares about this place.
Rooms and accommodation – types and prices
The hostel offers quite a variety of accommodation rooms, which can easily accommodate a large number of tourists longing for some rest. You will find mainly dormitory rooms here, which is typical for most mountain chalets, which by the way, is very conducive to integration and making new acquaintances with other mountain enthusiasts. The chalet offers a comfortable overnight stay. However, you must bear in mind that the availability of specific rooms and prices may vary – depending on the season, as well as the current occupancy rate. It is always advisable to check in advance what is available and how much it costs, preferably by contacting us directly. Remember, the standard of a mountain hut is not that of a hotel, but whatever, it guarantees a warm corner and simply a comfortable bed after a long day of hiking (and that is priceless!).
Tourist facilities – what does the hostel offer?
The hostel puts a number of facilities at the guests’ disposal, which, there is no denying, can make your stay more enjoyable. You have a dining room, where you can order and eat something warm, and also, which is a great option, a tourist kitchen for those who prefer to cook something themselves, according to their own preference. There is also a common room, in my opinion the perfect place to sit in the evening, perhaps with board games, or just for a lazy break. Invaluably, especially after a day’s walk in the rain or snow, you can finally dry those soaked boots or jacket here. All in all, basic things like access to maps or up-to-date trail information are pretty much standard here.
Catering – menu and meal times
The buffet at the hut, if I remember correctly, serves quite tasty, the kind of home-cooked lunches that are ideal for recovering before continuing on the trek, or after coming off the trail. On the menu you’ll find all those classics of hostel cuisine – soups, dumplings or lunch dishes – often, it’s worth noting, prepared from locally available produce. Each dish or course is filling. It is, after all, the ideal place to eat properly. The hours the buffet is open are usually to suit the rhythm of tourists, but it’s worth peeking at the board to make sure. Usually breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at set times.
Accessibility for people with disabilities
As for the accessibility of the hostel for people with disabilities… Well, unfortunately, due to the very nature of the building and its location in a mountainous, uneven terrain, this can be, let’s face it, limited. This is why it is so important to contact the chalet staff directly before finally planning your stay. Only they will be able to give you precise information about the conditions and what, if anything, can be adapted to your needs. This is a key step to avoid disappointment on site.
Attractions and tourism in the St Catherine area

Let’s face it, the area around St Catherine’s is simply a real, inexhaustible paradise for anyone who appreciates nature, history and, above all, active recreation. The Świętokrzyskie region, no matter how you look at it, has a lot to offer, and the PTTK mountain hostel in this location is a perfect starting point from which to discover all these treasures. What’s more, tourism – both mountain and typically sightseeing – flourishes here practically all year round, so there is no wrong time to come. The impact on the development of the sightseeing movement has been enormous.
Hiking trails – map and route suggestions
The Świętokrzyskie Mountains, although sometimes perceived as “low”, are nevertheless famous for their surprisingly dense network of hiking trails, varying in difficulty. One of the most recognisable ones starts directly from Święta Katarzyna – the famous red trail leading to Łysica, which is, after all, the highest peak of the entire range, with a gołoborze and a charming chapel characteristic for the region. There are also other trails, for example to the Town Hill, the St. Nicolas Pass, as well as to Bodzentyn or Nowa Słupia. Maps and more detailed descriptions of the individual routes can easily be found in the chapel, as well as at local tourist information centres – a great help in planning this once-in-a-lifetime perfect hike. In fact, all the hiking trails here are, for the most part, well-maintained and very clearly marked.
- Red trail to Łysica
- Blue trail to Bodzentyn
- Yellow trail to Huta Szklana (Święty Krzyż)
- Green trail to the Town Hill
The most beautiful views and vantage points
Although the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, as I have already mentioned, do not impress with their height like the Tatras or the Karkonosze, they can offer views that are truly breathtaking – beautiful panoramas stretching over the area. From Łysica itself, if the weather is good, you can see the nearby mountain ranges, and with perfect visibility it is said to be possible to see even very distant areas. It is worth taking a moment to look for those slightly less obvious, less well-known viewpoints in the area, which you can reach by following less frequented paths. You know what, the very surroundings of the hut, especially during the magical moments of sunrise or sunset, provide, in my subjective opinion, an unforgettable visual experience. It’s in general a great place to just sit, admire nature and give yourself over to reflection, away from the daily rush. You could also try drawing a picture of the view.
Interesting places in the area – what shouldn’t you miss?
But after all, man does not live by hiking alone, does he? There are a whole host of other interesting places and attractions near St Catherine’s that you simply cannot miss. The Cistercian Monastery in Wąchock or the picturesque castle ruins in Bodzentyn should definitely be on your “must see” list. The Park of Miniatures in Świętokrzysko, located in Huta Szklana, and the Cultural and Archaeological Centre in Nowa Słupia, from where the famous Royal Road to Święty Krzyż (Holy Cross) starts. As you can see, the area literally abounds in places strongly connected with the rich history and culture of the entire Świętokrzyskie region.
Activities for tourists – what to do in your free time?
Apart from this classic, much-loved hiking, the St Catherine’s area also offers other ways to spend your free time actively. Lovers of two wheels will find quite a lot for themselves here, as there is a good network of cycle paths, and in winter? Well, if you are ready for, shall we say, “different” conditions than in the Alps (the Swietokrzyskie Mountains are not typically alpine), there are ski slopes nearby which, weather permitting, can be used. In the warmer months, you can also simply spread out a blanket in the countryside, have a picnic with friends, or simply indulge in your hobby of landscape photography. You can also watch a film in the evening. Whatever the season, whether it’s Christmas time or Easter, the area invites you to create, such as diy decorations. You can find inspiration for Christmas decorations made of paper or handmade on crochet. Sometimes simple things like Christmas decorations for the window or in glass can create a special atmosphere. Even when thinking about souvenirs, you can find local products that resemble ornaments. Some people also remember to decorate their graves by preparing Christmas decorations for the cemetery. This is one of those places that even encourages you to spend time outdoors, practically at any time of the year, and frankly, regardless of what you happen to have written in your calendar.
A mountain chalet in winter – preparing for difficult conditions

Ah, winter in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains can be… well, magical, but it can also be very demanding. Fortunately, St. Catherine’s Hostel is prepared to welcome visitors even in these more difficult, frosty conditions, providing, one might say, a warm and, most importantly, safe shelter after a day spent in this truly wintry scenery. If you are lucky enough to come across a period when the chalet is decorated (especially around Christmas), these winter decorations can really add that unique, cosy charm to the place. At Christmas time, Christmas decorations can be particularly beautiful, whether they are for the house or outdoor decorations, such as in front of the house or on the door. When thinking about the festive atmosphere, Christmas table decoration, fireplace decoration and even altar decoration in church come to mind. Preparations often include creating decorations for Christmas at school or kindergarten.
Safety in winter conditions
Hiking in winter, it goes without saying, requires us hikers not only to be physically prepared, but also to be quite aware of potential risks. Trails can be, as they are in winter, icy, heavily snow-covered and, to make matters worse, weather conditions in the mountains can change literally in the blink of an eye. So always, and I repeat always, check the weather forecast before you leave the warmth of your hut and, just as importantly, inform someone you trust of the route you plan to take and what time or so you intend to return – it’s basically a safety precaution, especially if you are going on a longer hike or the conditions on the trail are more difficult than usual. Make sure your phone battery is fully charged. It’s worth remembering that a day in the mountains, no matter what, can be a long one, and sometimes a very long one, so, either way, planning is absolutely key here.
Winter attractions in the area
In winter, the same Świętokrzyskie Mountains we know from summer show us a completely different, but equally beautiful face. Trails covered in powder snow become simply ideal, if conditions allow it, for cross-country skiing or simply for quiet winter walks in fairy-tale scenery. The surrounding villages, especially during the Christmas and New Year period or during the holidays, often organise a variety of local events. But I don’t think anything beats the peace and tranquillity to be found in the Świętokrzyskie winter wilderness – an absolutely unforgettable experience for any true tourist, in my opinion.
Equipment and preparation of the hostel for winter
The chalet, which is obvious and crucial in winter, is of course heated, which guarantees a comfortable stay even when it is crackling with sulphurous cold outside. The windows are airtight and inside there is that, you know, warm and cosy atmosphere that we like so much in mountain facilities. The kitchen in the buffet, probably to no one’s surprise, serves mainly hot, warming dishes, perfect after several hours of walking in the snow. I must point out, however, that (although not always) the availability of certain services or facilities may be somewhat more limited in winter than in summer. It’s always a good idea, just in case, to ask for details at the time of booking – it’s better to know in advance what you’re signing up for.
Chalets in summer – holiday activities and opportunities
When summer comes, the mountains, including those in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, literally burst into life, and hiking trails probably attract hikers the most. During this period, the St. Catherine’s Hostel becomes a natural centre of summer activities, offering a whole host of possibilities to spend your summer holidays actively, and of course, surrounded by the beautiful Świętokrzyskie nature. Could there be a better time to discover all the charms of this place? Probably not, but this is just my opinion!
Holiday attractions around the hostel
In summer, let me tell you frankly, the possibilities for spending time are almost endless. In addition to those classic hikes on the trails, you can, for example, take advantage of a really extensive network of cycle paths, and if they happen to be available in the area, visit some nearby swimming pool, which can be, shall we say, refreshing. There are also often various festivals or other outdoor events in the region, and it’s worth checking local event calendars. Warm weather, it goes without saying, is conducive to long walks, admiring the blooming vegetation and, very importantly for some, animal watching. All in all, a lot depends on which particular day, or rather period, you choose for your holiday – each can bring something completely new and surprising.
Organising summer holidays at the shelter
During the summer season, the hostel is, as I have already mentioned, usually full of people and life. This is when various meetings, popular bonfires and sometimes even intimate concerts or interesting lectures are often organised here. In my opinion, it is simply a fantastic opportunity to meet other people who share a passion for the mountains. The chalet can also prove helpful if you are planning something bigger, such as organised trips for groups, or so-called “green schools” for young people. Remember, however, that (it goes without saying) at the height of the holiday season the occupancy rate can be really high, so it is worth thinking about booking accommodation quite a bit in advance.
Summer weather conditions and preparing for a trip
Summer weather in the mountains can be… well, can be changeable. Beautiful, sunny days that we remember from postcards can suddenly and instantly alternate with violent storms. Therefore, and this is a golden rule, always have something in your rucksack to protect you from the rain – a light jacket, a cape – and a warm sweatshirt, even if the sun is blazing mercilessly in the morning. Never forget your headgear and UV sunscreen when the sun is strong and, just as importantly, to drink water regularly so you don’t get dehydrated. As a guide friend of mine says: “shoes are the basics, the rest are details, but important details”. When preparing for a trip, I always try to follow the weather forecasts, a few days beforehand, so that I have at least a general idea of what to expect.
Planning a hut trip – practical tips
What can I say, a well and, above all, cleverly planned trip is pretty much a guarantee of a successful and safe holiday. Whether you are thinking of a short day trip or perhaps a longer stay with an overnight stay, there are a few simple but reliable rules that will help you to fully enjoy your time in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains and specifically at the PTTK Hostel in St. Catherine. I personally always try to prepare as well as I can, and I recommend you do the same.
How do I prepare for a hike?
Before you set off, take a moment to sit down, study the route map and choose a route that really suits your physical condition and, of course, your time. It is obligatory to check the weather forecast and adapt your clothing and equipment on this basis. Remember to always, and I mean always, inform someone close to you of the route you are planning to take and approximately what time you intend to return – this is basically a safety precaution, especially if you are going on a longer hike or the conditions on the trail are more difficult than usual. Make sure your phone battery is fully charged. It’s worth remembering that a day in the mountains, no matter what, can be a long one, and sometimes a very long one, so, either way, planning is absolutely key here.
What should you take with you to the hostel?
What should you take with you? Well, the list of these essentials depends largely on how long you plan to stay and exactly what activities you have in mind. For a typical day hike, a small rucksack will suffice, including water, some provisions, a rain jacket and a small first aid kit. However, if you are going to spend the night in a hostel, you simply have to take a few extra things with you:
- A sleeping bag (because in some hostels, and St Catherine’s may be one of them, they require your own bedding or sleeping bag)
- A change of footwear (believe me, dry shoes after a full day are a treasure, and flip-flops are ideal for walking around the hostel)
- Toiletries and a towel (an obvious item, but easy to forget)
- Warm clothing for the evening (as it can be crisp in the mountains after sunset, even in summer)
- A torch/headlamp (just in case, you never know when it might come in handy)
- Cash (although it is increasingly possible to pay by card, this is not possible everywhere, it is better to have some with you)
- Map and compass/GPS (technology is great, but a paper map will never go out!)
- A first aid kit with basic medicines (a small thing, but it can save the day)
And remember, it’s such a mountain truth that the less stuff you carry, the lighter you are on the trail. So, pack with your head, that is, carefully.
Booking accommodation and contacting the hostel
As for booking accommodation, especially in high season and at weekends, the hostel can be really popular, so, my advice, definitely think about this beforehand. You could try to get in touch by phone, or write an email. It’s also always a good idea, before just arriving, to call or write to the hostel to enquire about those current trail conditions, to find out what time the buffet is open, or to ask about any specific facilities that interest you. Honestly, this direct contact with the hostel staff is, in my opinion, the best and surest way to get really up-to-date and verified information, without guesswork.
St Catherine’s Hostel – history and interesting facts
The PTTK hostel, standing proudly in Swieta Katarzyna, is a place that has a really rich history behind it – a history that, interestingly enough, is inextricably linked to how tourism developed in the whole of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. In fact, what we know today as the hostel has its roots in those old, still pre-war, tourism initiatives. The first such initiative was important. You know, all those activities undertaken around the Polish Tourist Society had one main goal: to popularise the region and make it as easy as possible to access its most beautiful, often hidden, corners. By the way, the influence of figures such as Aleksander Janowski on the formation of sightseeing in Poland was simply invaluable, and it is worth remembering this.
History of the hostel and its construction
The roots of the history of the hostel itself go back, as I mentioned, to the beginning of the last century, the twentieth of course. The first wooden hostel, which was probably quite modest at the time, was built in 1910 – it was an initiative of the Polish Tourist Society, which later turned into the PTTK we know today, and the whole thing was built in this Kielce part of the Świętokrzyskie region. It was, as far as I know, one of the first such places, such tourist hostels in this whole mountain range. The building was, of course, later rebuilt and extended many times, literally several times, in order to somehow meet the needs of the growing crowds of tourists from decade to decade. What we see today, this current shape, is the result of work, mainly post-war, and successive, successive modernisations, which, there is no denying, made it a really important point on the tourist map of this Świętokrzyskie region. What we know today as the hostel has its roots in those earlier years. (And do you remember what the hostels looked like a few decades ago? That’s progress!)
Interesting facts and legends related to the hostel and the mountain
You must know that the area around Swieta Katarzyna and Łysica itself is steeped in legends – there are plenty of them! Have you heard, for example, about the witches’ Sabbaths that supposedly took place on Lysá hora (or the Holy Cross)? Or about buried treasures hidden somewhere there? After all, the very name of the village, Saint Catherine, has its roots in history, more specifically in the figure of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and the Bernardine monastery located here. The hostel, which is, after all, an integral part of this historical and natural landscape, also has, shall we say, its own stories – often linked to these former charismatic guides, or simply to unusual encounters that took place on the trails here. In my opinion, it’s well worth taking a moment and listening to these stories – preferably from the older hikers themselves who remember ‘those days’, or simply from the hostel staff. They know most!
The impact of the hostel on the development of tourism in the region
Without a shadow of a doubt, the St Catherine’s Hostel played, one could say, an absolutely key role in the development of tourism in the whole of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Its existence, of course, greatly facilitated access to the local trails, and it became something of a major base for organising all sorts of excursions and sightseeing camps. In fact, it is thanks to it that more and more people have had, and still have, the opportunity to discover the extraordinary beauty of this region. I think that all these initiatives of the PTTK in Swieta Katarzyna, as well as simply the role of the hostel as a place where you can find cheap, safe accommodation, have contributed greatly to the fact that this mountain range has become such a popular destination for weekend trips or longer holidays. This is without doubt, such a very important element of the entire tourist infrastructure that shapes the Świętokrzyskie region.
St. Catherine’s Hostel – final impressions and recommendations
Visiting the PTTK Hostel in Św. Katarzyna is, to be honest, an experience that, in my opinion, is really worth putting on your personal list of travel destinations. This place has something special, a kind of… soul, located in the very heart of these, after all, beautiful but, as you can sometimes see, still somewhat underrated Świętokrzyskie Mountains. And you know what? Whether you are a seasoned hiker, or just starting out on your mountain adventure, or looking for a quiet place to relax in the countryside, I am sure you will find something to your liking here. As someone who loves the mountains and Polish tourism, I can, and indeed should, wholeheartedly recommend this hostel. It is probably one of the best proofs that these traditional, “old” hostels of ours still have that unique, magical atmosphere and play, importantly, a key role in encouraging people to spend their free time actively. Just come and, ideally, see it all for yourself!
