Let’s start with what is protected in the Prządki reserve. The Prządki Nature Reserve, or more precisely the Prządki Nature Reserve named after Professor Henryk Świdziński, is a place that has intrigued people for centuries. Its unusual rock formations have been the subject of interest since time immemorial, stimulating the imagination and laying the ground for colourful tales. Situated in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in the Korczyna municipality, the reserve is today a refuge for unique nature and a testimony to ancient beliefs.

Legends and stories woven in stone – from old Slavic beliefs to contemporary tales

The name of the Prządki nature reserve derives, as is often the case, directly from a captivating legend. The one about the girls who, instead of resting and celebrating the holiday, were engaged in, much to their horror, spinning flax. For this act, of course, they were severely punished – turned into stone. This tale, however, is just one of many stories circulating about these unusual rocks, although by far the most famous.

Although the legend is charming, the site has a much longer history associated with human presence. In the early Middle Ages, there was a Slavic settlement at the foot of Prządki, as evidenced by a barrow burial ground discovered in the area twenty years ago. History also tells the story of the castle in Odrzykon, where long ago a castellan lived with his wife, the castellan, who had, how else, three daughters.

When the knights of the king himself stayed in Odrzykon, they fell in love with the girls, of course. The knights were about to go to war, so they asked their daughters to weave souvenirs from flax. Unfortunately, the girls were spinning, ironically, on a holy day. When the church bell rang, the castellated girls turned into rocks.

The three white rocks resembling the spinning girls are called, yes, that’s right, the Three Spits, giving the name to the whole reserve. As a regionalist friend of mine says, “every rock has a story, but the ones here have at least a few”, and it’s hard to disagree with him.

The origin of the reserve and its unique natural values – a fascinating world of flora and fauna

The Prządki Nature Reserve, named after Professor Henryk Świdziński, was established in 1957. Why? Well, to protect these unique rock formations and the surrounding nature. It is located within the Czarnorzecko-Strzyżowski Landscape Park, which is itself an area of high scenic and natural value. The object of protection in the reserve is, above all, these remarkable rock formations, but, equally importantly, also the rare plant and animal species that have found refuge here.

The reserve protects the fascinating world of flora and fauna and is an important point on the natural map of the Subcarpathian region. Actually, looking at it from a different perspective, it is not only protecting the rocks, but the entire, extremely valuable ecosystem. Although, of course, it is the rocks that immediately catch the eye and attract most visitors!

The rock formations – the heart of the Spits, which have been beating for millions of years

The most distinctive feature of the Prządki Nature Reserve is its monumental rocks. They are the ones that attract crowds of tourists and are the subject of countless photographs (I myself have probably a hundred of them from my last visit). Built of coarse-grained Ciężkowice sandstone and Eocene shale, they form a complex of rocky outcrops that rise proudly above the surrounding forest, like stone guardians of time. Their beauty can be seen in numerous photographs taken by tourists.

Prządka-Matka, Prządka-Baba, Heršt and Robber Madej – unusual rock formations and their geological origin

These rocks, reaching up to more than 20 metres in height, have such unusual, even fanciful, shapes that for years they simply had to excite people’s imagination, leading to them being given these amusing, yet apt, names. The most well-known are, of course, Prządka-Matka, Prządka-Baba, Herst and Robber Madej.

Their geological origin is absolutely fascinating! They are rocky outcrops, i.e. formations created by the selective weathering and erosion of less resistant rocks surrounding the harder layers of the Ciężkowice sandstone, which sounds complicated, but in practice means millions of years of water, wind and frost that have sculpted this landscape.

This, my dears, is testimony to the millions of years of geological processes that have shaped the present-day landscape of the Subcarpathian region. Isn’t it amazing to think about this time scale, looking at these stone colossi?

A walk among the rock giants – hiking trails and viewpoints

It is best to start exploring the Prządki reserve by walking along the designated hiking trails. The reserve is quite well prepared for visitors, offering paths leading directly under the rocks, which is a big plus. One popular route is the nature trail that connects the Prządki Nature Reserve with the Kamieniec Castle in Odrzykoń. Walking along it, we can admire not only the impressive rock formations, but also the surrounding nature, although I’ll be honest, at times when walking along this path, the rocks get lost in the forest.

Within the Czarnorzecko-Strzyżowski Landscape Park there are five hiking trails that connect various points, including:

• The black trail from Odrzykoń to Czarnorzki
• A trail connecting Kamieniec Castle, Czarnorzeki, Sucha Góra, Królewska Góra and back to Kamieniec Castle

There are also vantage points from which you can admire the panorama of the reserve and its surroundings, although the rocks themselves, let’s face it, look best when viewed from close up, from the level of the paths at their base. After all, that’s why we go there, isn’t it?

The Prządki reserve in the context of the region – what else is worth seeing in Podkarpacie?

The Prządki Reserve, while an excellent destination in its own right, is also a great starting point for exploring the wider area. Located in Podkarpacie, a region full of attractions, it will easily fit into a longer trip through this fascinating part of Poland. In fact, when planning a visit to Podkarpacie, it would be a shame to skip Prządki!

Podkarpackie pearls – Prządki surrounded by other tourist attractions

The little-talked-about Podkarpackie Voivodeship abounds in really interesting places. When visiting the Prządki Nature Reserve, it is definitely worth planning a visit to the nearby Kamieniec Castle in Odrzykoń, made famous by Aleksander Fredro’s “Revenge” (a must for anyone who has read it!). Other Podkarpackie gems waiting to be discovered include:

• View Vineyard in Kombornia, offering beautiful landscapes and local wines (something for connoisseurs, and more!).
• The railway shelter in Strzyżów or Stępina – testimonies of history which are impressive despite their difficult past.
• Numerous Podkarpackie spas, such as Polańczyk-Zdrój, Latoszyn-Zdrój or Rymanów-Zdrój, known for their health benefits and, let’s face it, beautiful landscapes.
• The Bieszczady Mountains, with their picturesque trails, Lake Solina, the Bieszczady National Park, the Starry Sky Park or the show enclosure in Muczny – a veritable paradise for lovers of mountains and wildlife.
• Other interesting places include the Saint John of Dukla Hermitage, the Christmas Tree Bomb Museum in Nowa Dęba, Lake Tarnobrzeg in Tarnobrzeg, the Hunting Lodge in Julin or the Beksiński Gallery in Sanok, which is simply amazing.

The Prządki Nature Reserve is, let’s face it, the perfect stopover when discovering the riches of the Subcarpathian region. When I was planning a trip to this part of the country recently, I squeezed Prządki in between a castle and a vineyard, and it was a hit!

Location and access – how to plan a trip to the reserve

The Prządki Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Korczyna, lying north of Krosno and between Korczyna and Czarnorzki. More precisely, it is located, if I am not mistaken, about 43 km from Rzeszów and 12 km from Krosno. Getting to the reserve is, generally speaking, relatively easy. Most often travellers head for the villages of Czarnorzeki or Korczyna, from where there are marked trails leading to the reserve, and this, importantly, makes it easy to find your way around.

Parking is available near the entrance to the reserve, which is, of course, very convenient and makes it easier to plan a visit, although in high season, as it happens, it can be crowded and finding a parking place then takes more time. Information on access, entrance tickets, parking and current weather can be easily found when preparing for a trip, but it’s worth checking for any local difficulties, isn’t it?

Prządki Nature Reserve – attractions for everyone who loves nature and adventure

The Prządki Nature Reserve is a place that offers more than just admiring the rocks. Its location within the Czarnorzecko-Strzyżowski Landscape Park makes it, dare we say, an ideal place for various forms of active recreation. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend a day in the lap of nature?

Active holidays surrounded by nature – hiking and cycling trails

For hiking enthusiasts, the reserve and its surroundings offer numerous hiking trails. In addition to the aforementioned nature trail to Kamieniec Castle, you can explore, and with enthusiasm, the trails of the Czarnorzec-Strzyżów Landscape Park. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Subcarpathian nature, admire the diversity of the forest and enjoy the fresh air. The area is also, interestingly, cycle-friendly, although let’s face it, some of the routes can, if you’re out of shape, be quite challenging due to the terrain.

Visiting the reserve with a dog is usually possible, provided you keep it on a lead, which is, to say the least, a standard rule in nature reserves, and rightly so, for the safety of the animals and other visitors. As a friend of mine, an avid hiker, says: “Mountains are not just about views, they are also about effort, and here both.”

Rock climbing – for lovers of adrenaline and beautiful views

The Prządki nature reserve is also, and this must be emphasised, a well-known climbing area. The rocky outcrops, especially those made of coarse-grained Ciężkowice sandstone, are, no doubt, a challenge and attraction for climbers. This area, as I heard from one enthusiast, is one of the largest climbing areas in south-eastern Poland. Climbing at Prządki requires, of course, the right skills and equipment, as well as an awareness of the safety rules of the nature reserve, which is, quite simply, crucial. The views from the top, surely, must be unforgettable, although I myself, I admit, have never dared to try. In fact, I think I’d prefer to admire their exploits from below, from a safe path (I’m more of a walker type).

Closer to nature – flora and fauna of Prządki nature reserve

The Prządki Nature Reserve is not only about impressive rocks and captivating legends, but also about natural wealth. It is worth it, simply worth it, to take a moment to look closer at the flora and look for signs of the animals that inhabit the area. After all, it is a nature reserve, isn’t it?

The reserve’s vegetation – a wealth of species and unique vegetation

The vegetation of the reserve is, it must be said, very diverse, and this is due to the mosaic of habitats – from shady and damp places at the foot of the rocks to dry and sunny tops. Species characteristic of beech and fir forests can be found here, but also plants that, surprisingly, like rock crevices. The unique vegetation of the reserve includes rare and protected species, making it an important area for biodiversity conservation. Walking along the paths, we are sure to spot, if we are attentive, interesting plant species.

In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many ferns in one place! And yet, the plants, although perhaps not as spectacular as the rocks, create all the magic of the place.

The animal world – what animals can be found in the Prządki Nature Reserve?

Although animals are often more secretive than plants, the Prządki reserve is home to, let’s face it, many species. We can meet here typical inhabitants of Podkarpacie forests, such as roe deer, wild boar, foxes and squirrels. The reserve is also a refuge for numerous bird species. Although these are not exotic species, observing them in their natural environment provides, at least for me, a lot of joy and allows me to feel a real bond with nature.

Remember, and this is crucial, to keep quiet and calm so as not to frighten the inhabitants of the reserve, because, after all, this is their home. Sometimes, if you are lucky and patient, you will manage to spot more than just a squirrel, although they can be quite cute too!

Prządki Nature Reserve – planning a visit, or how to prepare

To fully enjoy your visit to Prządki Nature Reserve, it is worth, as they say, preparing properly. A good plan is, without a doubt, the key to a successful trip, regardless of whether you are interested in the Prządki rock reserve mainly for its legends, geology or active recreation. When preparing to visit the Prządki nature reserve, it is worth taking comfortable trekking shoes, which will prove useful on forest and rocky paths, which, as you know, are not in short supply. If you are planning a longer hike in the Czarnorzek-Strzyżów Landscape Park, a map of the Prządki reserve and its surroundings will, I should say, be very helpful, provided you know how to use it.

Information about the reserve, including the current weather, can be found in various sources before you go, which is, you know, sensible. It’s also a good idea to have a charged phone because the range, well, it can vary, which is sometimes, let’s face it, a slight inconvenience.

Safety in the reserve – tips and advice for tourists

Safety is, and unquestionably is, the top priority when visiting Prządki Nature Reserve. You should only follow the designated hiking trails and paths, and this, I admit, can sometimes be a temptation to stray. It is dangerous and forbidden to climb the rocks outside of the designated trails, unless as part of an organised rock climbing activity with appropriate safeguards, which is a completely different story.

Let’s remember that we are in a nature reserve – no littering, no noise and, very importantly, no picking of plants. Let’s respect nature and other visitors, because after all, everyone has the right to peace and quiet. The Prządki reserve, like other protected areas, has its own regulations, with which, if you are prepared to spend a while, it is worth getting acquainted, because it is, to say the least, for our common good.
