Pre-war Wertheim, later PeDeT and now Renoma – the pearl of Wrocław architecture
April 23, 2024
Wrocław, a city with a rich history and a multicultural heritage, has at its heart a building that has gone through decades of change, retaining its architectural and historical value. I am talking about the building that started out as Wertheim, later became famous as PeDeT and is now known as Renoma.
From Art Déco to modernity: Wertheim transforms into Renoma

Built in the Art Déco style under the guidance of Herman Dernburg, this pearly building opened its doors on 2 April 1930. Its seven floors and glazed courtyards were not only a place of commerce, but also a symbol of modernity and luxury. Details such as rich ceramics, gilding and sculptural embellishments set it apart from other Breslau buildings.
Names and functions: The evolution of commercial space

Over the years, the building has adapted to changing historical and economic realities. During World War II, when it was known as AWAG, the luxury restaurant was converted into a soldiers’ canteen. After the war, as PeDeT, it was the first and largest department store in post-war Poland.
Reconstruction and modernisation: Renoma regains its lustre
In 2009, after extensive renovation, Renoma reopened to the people of Wrocław with a new retail and office offer. The renovation highlighted historical elements while introducing modern features that attracted both local residents and tourists.

Awards and distinctions: Renown as a symbol of architectural beauty
It is not without reason that Renoma has been voted Poland’s most beautiful department store. Its architectural beauty and functionality are appreciated by both experts and users of the space.
Vision of the future: What will the next decade bring?
The completion of the redevelopment in 2022 opened a new chapter for Renoma. Under the direction of Zbigniew Maćkow, the designer of the redevelopment, the building has gained new retail and office zones that redefine its role in the urban fabric.

We, as the community of Wrocław, have witnessed this unique building evolve, adapting to new times while retaining its heritage. The reputation not only enhances the aesthetics and cultural value of our city, but also plays a key role in the life of the local community. What was once the Wertheim and the PeDeT, today as the Renoma continues to bear witness to ongoing adaptation and reconstruction, making it a true jewel in the crown of Wrocław architecture.
We invite you to discover its beauty for yourself by strolling along Wrocław’s historic alleys, where the past and the future intertwine to create a unique cityscape.
