What is worth seeing while on Lake Nyskie?

Lake Nyskie, which is also often referred to as Zalew Nyski (Nysa Reservoir), is a real gem, a tourist oasis offering plenty of ways to spend time, and not just in the summer. Our travelling soul immediately feels… um, well, like in paradise! And you, I am sure, will find something perfect for you among these numerous attractions on Lake Nyskie. From charming, quiet spots for total relaxation to places where life is vibrant and adrenaline is in the air. But let’s start with what is most important for many on the water.

The most beautiful beaches and bathing areas – where to spread a blanket?

When we think of a lake, the image of a sandy beach and refreshing water immediately springs to mind, doesn’t it? Lake Nysa fortunately, er… well, has them in abundance indeed. The best known and undoubtedly the largest is the beach in Skorochów – proudly, and perhaps a little exaggeratedly, called the “Polish Copacabana”. It’s a great place to just sunbathe, relax and take advantage of all the tourist infrastructure that’s there. But it is, you must know, not the only place like this! There’s also a nice place to relax in Głębinowo, right on Lake Nyskie. And if you go to the area around Wójcice, you will come across something really special, the “Nysa Seychelles”. These are small islands, scattered a bit haphazardly over the surface of the lake, which add to the landscape’s… well, exotic, unique charm. There is also another, charming “Blue Bay” with a sandy shore and, worth mentioning, a beautiful view of a range of nearby mountains. It is worth checking the water level and clarity before swimming. Remember, too, that some passages may be unofficial meeting places for naturists, although there is no official naturist beach here. For many, it is important to note that Lake Nysa Beaches also includes a dog beach.

You’ll also find a beach on a cliff – it’s partly concrete, partly sand, but what’s cool is that it offers the possibility to drive a camper van or pitch a tent. And from here you can see, well, elegantly see the “Nisa Seychelles”. Children are sure to enjoy playing on the sand, and you’ll also find colourful playgrounds in the area, making Lake Nysa’s attractions for children really exceptionally rich. (Perhaps only the sand on the “Copacabana” can sometimes be a little hot!). Fishing and water sports – a paradise for those who will not sit still

For those who primarily seek active relaxation by the water, Lake Nyskie is, no denying, a perfect place. After all, you can do so many things here! Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing… or the recently fashionable paddleboarding, or SUP. There is the Nysa Sailing Club, where, if you want, you can rent a yacht or even try your hand at a sailing patent. And if you feel a greater need for adrenaline, you can always take advantage of the water equipment rental offer and try, let’s say, water skiing or scooters. Nysa Lake has water attractions at a really high level. For those who prefer something quieter on the water, however, you can always rent such a classic, reliable water bike.

And anglers? Oh, anglers will love it here! The lake is probably their favourite fishing spot in the area, if not in the entire Opole region. Remember, however, that fishing requires a proper permit. These can often be obtained, for example, through the PZW (Polish Angling Association). In the wilder part of the lake, near Wójcice, where such… well, tiny, charming marinas are hidden by the shore, you may encounter numerous species of fish. Perch, bream, zander, catfish, pike – there is a lot of it. What’s more, supposedly, but it is supposedly, in the waters of Lake Nysa you can even come across protected fish species, such as brook trout, sliver, or lake trout. (Although you really need a lot of luck and knowledge to catch them). Water cleanliness is monitored and the class of the water varies depending on the season. If you are interested in fishing on other reservoirs, it is worth checking out, for example, Lake Strykowskie, although it is located near Strykow and has a slightly different specificity.

Lake Nysa – history and geography in a nutshell

OK, now that we know what to do, let’s get to know this fascinating place a little deeper. Its history and location make Lake Nyskie not only a great place for sunbathing or swimming, but also an interesting point on the map for anyone who is at least a little curious about the world.

The origin of the lake – from flooded villages to a tourist oasis

Lake Nyskie, which we have already referred to as Zalew Nyski, is an artificial reservoir. It was created, and here sources give either 1971 or 1972, in the valley of the Nysa Kłodzka River. Its creation was part of a large hydrotechnical project. It was intended to protect the area from flooding, as well as to serve energy and recreational purposes. Unfortunately, the creation of the lake was also linked to a rather tragic event – the flooding of large areas of several villages. Miedniki, Brzeziny Polska and parts of houses in Skorochów and Głębinów are mentioned. Despite these sad beginnings, today Lake Nyskie is a lively place, a kind of… well, a real tourist oasis, which attracts crowds of visitors every year. Sometimes, unfortunately, there is a problem with blue-green algae blooming in the lake, forming such an unpleasant blanket on the surface. And this, it is known, can rule out swimming. Although the services try to react, nature has its own laws, and natural phenomena such as blue-green algae blooms can be a nuisance. (Although the services try to react, nature has its rights).

A charming location – a lake at the foot of the mountains

What needs to be emphasised is that Lake Nyskie is situated in a truly picturesque location. It is located at the foot of the Opawskie Mountains, obviously in the Opolskie Voivodeship, in this southern part of Poland. It also lies within the entire Otmuchowsko-Nyski Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu. From the shores of the lake there is a truly magnificent view, and not only of the nearby Opawskie Mountains. You can also see, in good weather, the Golden Mountains and the Bardzkie Mountains. If you decide to take a trip around the area, for example by bike, you will also notice the Sudeten ranges and even the Czech Jeseníky Mountains. Interestingly, the lake is a refuge for waterfowl species that are rare throughout Europe. And, last but not least, it is the only place in Opole Silesia where black-headed gulls breed. This combination of water, mountains and wild nature means that this view from the beach in Skorochów could, in my humble opinion, easily compete for the title of the most beautiful view in the entire Opole Voivodeship. (Although, of course, there are no discussions about tastes, but this view is simply wow!).

Attractions around Lake Nysa – what else awaits in the area?

Guess what? Lake Nyskie itself is only the beginning of the adventure! The surrounding area really hides a lot of other, equally intriguing places, which beg to be visited and explored. Within a radius of 30 kilometres or so from the lake, you will find many interesting places. Looking for information on attractions, you will find many things to do.

Nysa – a town with history and something more

Nysa – well, it’s a city! Beautiful, full of monuments, also located in the Opolskie Voivodeship, not far from Otmuchów, Grodków or Głuchołazy, in the Sudeten Foreland. Situated in a… well, a deep basin where two rivers converge – the Nysa Kłodzka and the Biała Głuchołaska. The city was once called “Silesian Rome” or “Silesian Athens”, and not without reason, mainly due to the wonderful sacred architecture monuments that are there. In Nysa there are, well, more attractions to visit than you might expect. Nysa’s tourist attractions are extremely rich. You can see some truly beautiful sights here, such as the majestic St James’ Cathedral or the Town Hall with its magnificent tower. There are also forts from the time of the Prussian Fortress to see: Fort Water and Fort II. Nysa sightseeing attractions are on the list from historic churches to fortifications. Besides, if you are interested in the history of the region, there is the County Museum in Nysa, where you can really get deep into it. In addition to sightseeing, Nysa also offers entertainment for the young and young at heart. Nysa also has, importantly for travellers, quite a convenient connection to the big centres of both Lower and Upper Silesia, and even to the Czech Republic. Nysa is an ideal place for a weekend getaway.

By bike and on foot around the lake – for lovers of two wheels and walks

Cycling and hiking trails surround Lake Nysa, which is simply ideal and encourages you to spend time actively. One of these really popular activities is, of course, cycling, yes around Lake Nysa in the Opole region. The whole route, if you want to go all the way around it, varies somewhere between 35 and 55 kilometres, depending on which variant you choose. I, remember, once started such a route directly from the centre of Nysa, it was an interesting experience. Particularly cool, well, actually perfect, is this cycle trail along the dam. The section we’re cycling along is nothing but… well, this concrete dam, impressive! A concrete dam has been built from Skorochow towards Nysa, along which you can ride all the way to Siestrzechowice. This section ends more or less near the Biała Nyska. Unfortunately, you have to carry your bike across the beach in Skorochów, as it is not possible to ride freely there. Continuing towards Nysa, you pass Głębinów and this main beach in Skorochów. And if you start from Otmuchów, it is best to simply ride along the Nysa Kłodzka, which, as you know, flows from Lake Otmuchów into the Nysa. An interesting vantage point to keep in mind is that aforementioned beach on the cliff, from where you can see the “Nysa Seychelles” perfectly. Our cycling trip around Lake Nyskie, which, I must admit, totally enchanted us, started at the beginning of this concrete embankment, and we simply circled the whole body of water. The counter on the bike then showed something in the region of 35 kilometres after this loop. When planning a trip like this, it’s a good idea to have a map or mapping handy to help guide you. (Although there are sections where the road surface is not ideal, so be careful). Also check how to get to selected points along the route.

Events and happenings – when the lake really comes alive

Lake Nysa is, admittedly, a place of beautiful views and plenty of sporting opportunities, but that’s not all. It is also a place where, in the summer… well, it comes alive! All thanks to numerous events, festivals and happenings which attract, literally, crowds of tourists every year.

The Festival of Water and Fire – a spectacle that will take your breath away

Perhaps the most spectacular event is undoubtedly the Water and Fire Festival (sometimes also called the Fire and Water Festival). It takes place on the shores of Lake Nysa, usually organised in Skorochów. It is, you must believe me, a real spectacle of light and sound. It simply combines art, music and… well, nature, I guess, in an amazing way. The pyrotechnic masters create such incredible compositions, using colourful flashes, smoke, and of course sound effects and spectacular fireworks. And the spectators? They sit by the thousands on this 20-metre-high dam and indulge in the magic of this spectacle, watching the shows, which often take place from floating barges on the lake. Stages are set up on the shores with artistic performances, live concerts, dance shows… Well, it’s happening! There are also plenty of food outlets on the festival grounds where you can sample, well, local delicacies. If you’ve never been there before, it’s really worth saving the date for the next edition. For example, the next edition took place on 26 August 2023, and let me tell you, it attracted tourists not only from Poland, but even from the Czech Republic and Germany! (although be prepared for huge crowds and sometimes parking problems).

Other interesting events in the area

The Nysa Lake area also offers other equally interesting and often historic events. For example, on the first weekend in August, Nysa celebrates the “Nysa Fortress Days”. This, let me tell you, is a unique opportunity to move… well, into the past. Historical re-enactments are carried out in the Nysa forts. For example, their capture by Napoleonic troops. The cannons fire with a… well, a big bang, and howitzers are loaded with cabbage! (a must see!). A colourful procession of troops also passes through the town centre. And on the lake itself you can see ships, often with pirate flags, trying to kidnap some princess from the sandy shore. It’s really great fun, the kind of… well, living history lesson that I think everyone will enjoy.

Accommodation and gastronomy – where to eat and lay your head on Lake Nysa?

When planning a stay at Lake Nyskie, you don’t have to worry about accommodation or food. You have a really wide range of options to choose from, both accommodation and dining. From such … well, intimate guesthouses, to larger, elaborate resorts or campsites.

Hotels, guesthouses, cottages – find something for you

Whether you are looking for luxury or perhaps something more budget-friendly, you are sure to find suitable Lake Nysa accommodation. The largest such accommodation facility and at the same time quite an attraction for tourists is probably the Nysa Recreation Centre. But not only! In Skorochów, and also in the vicinity of this Blue Bay, you will find plenty of places with pubs, full tourist infrastructure and very often also… well, with cottages or rooms to let. So you can opt for cottages on Lake Nysa, choose one of the guesthouses, or stay in a larger resort. There are holiday cottages, camping cabins, as well as new cottages in modern standard or, for example, Aro cottages. It is worth checking out the offers for cottage rentals or cottages for rent, as well as cottages for rent. You can browse the offers on popular portals, such as Olx, or book accommodation in advance on Booking.com. In my opinion, it’s worth looking for Lake Nysa accommodation options close to the beach, so that you can then have easy access to swimming areas and, you know, water sports. For many, it’s important to be able to bring pets – check which Lake Nysa accommodation is available with a dog. Those looking for an investment may want to consider houses for sale on Lake Neisse. Where to eat – from fish to a quick snack

After an eventful day, nothing tastes as good as a good meal! You will find quite a few restaurants and bars on Lake Nysa. Especially in Skorochów and in the area of these main beaches, the choice is, well, quite large. Food outlets, for example at festivals, often offer local delicacies. Would you try the freshly caught fish from the lake? That, it seems to me, is always a good idea! Or are you looking for something quick to keep you going? At the beach bar on Lake Neisse, as well as being able to hire a SUP or other equipment, you’ll often have a good coffee and a snack. (Although prices in high season can be… well, touristy).

A handful of practical tips for tourists – how to get here and what else?

Before you set off for Lake Nysa, however, I have put together a few such… well, practical tips for you, which can make your trip even more enjoyable and hassle-free.

How do you get to Lake Nysa? It is not that difficult!

Lake Nyskie is located in Poland, of course in the Opolskie Voivodeship, quite close to the border with the Czech Republic. If you are driving from Katowice, it will take you roughly two hours by car. Nysa, the city, provides, as I already mentioned, a convenient connection to the large centres of both Lower and Upper Silesia, as well as to the Czech Republic. If you are travelling by train, there are trains from Opole to Nysa, for example. And as Nysa is close to Lake Nysa, access to most beaches or resorts is usually… well, pretty easy. (Although in high season the roads can sometimes be crowded, as a friend of mine says, “as always in July”).

Ideal picnic spots – with a view!

Nothing, let me tell you frankly, completes a day on the water like a delicious picnic! Lake Nysa really does offer many charming spots that are simply perfect for a meal in nature. For example, you can have a picnic on one of these picturesque beaches. Such sandy beaches as the one in Skorochów or in Blue Bay, overlooking the mountains and the water… well, they’re just made for spreading out a blanket, pulling out a picnic basket and simply enjoying your food with that beautiful view in the background. The wilder parts of the lake, for example around Wojcice, where these small marinas are tucked along the shore, can also offer such… well, peaceful picnic spots for those looking for a little more privacy and an escape from the crowds. Just remember, this is absolutely key: take everything you need with you and, most importantly, clean up after yourself! Nature will thank you.

Travelling in the area – what else to see within a 30 km radius?

The Opole region is a region where, let me tell you, it is worth staying longer and discovering all these fascinating places. If you were planning such a longer stopover, within a radius of 30 kilometres or so of Lake Nysa, you will find a great many interesting corners and sights. The Nysa Fortress, which we have already mentioned, and the Otmuchów Castle, whose walls majestically tower over the town of Otmuchów, are definitely worth seeing. Not far from Lake Nysa is also, interestingly enough, Lake Otmuchowskie, often referred to as… well, “Silesian Masuria”. This too, like the Nyskie, hides the Opole region and is the destination of many excursions. You can visit those impressive defensive walls in Paczków, see the beautiful Palace in Kopice, St. George’s Church in Ziębice, climb Biskupia Kopa in the Opawskie Mountains (for those who like trekking!), visit Wok Tower in Prudnik, admire Sulisław Palace or stroll through the Arboretum in Lipno. Nysa itself, after all, a short distance away from the lake, is a city that offers plenty of sights and attractions in itself.

Lake Nysa is also located, which gives some idea of the range of exploration, in the vicinity of Opole (approx. 46.8 km), Moszna (approx. 30.8 km – with its famous castle!), the Kłodzko Basin (approx. 48.4 km), Kłodzko (approx. 48.3 km), Krapkowice (approx. 44.8 km) and Brzeg (approx. 44.3 km). This shows how many interesting places are, well, within easy reach if you only plan to explore this part of Poland. It is, of course, completely different scenery from, say, the scenic route through Tarnica, Halicz and Rozsypaniec in the Bieszczady Mountains, or that city’s Palm House in Gliwice, but… well, equally worth discovering!

Other famous lakes and water phenomena around the world

Travelling around the world, you may come across a variety of bodies of water. Although Lake Nysa is unique in its region, it is worth mentioning other famous lakes that differ in their characteristics. For example, in Austria, and especially in the Tyrol, the Alps hide many beautiful lakes. Austria A lake such as Neusiedler See, located in Burgenland, a region near the border with Hungary, is quite different – very shallow, with extensive reed beds, and part of a National Park. It can be reached from Vienna, and the area is popular for camping and radmarathon cycling. Other Austrian lakes include the picturesque Weissensee, the touristic Attersee, Hallstatt, Achensee or Carinthia’s largest lake, Wörthersee, as well as Traunsee and Lake Constance on the border with Germany and Switzerland. It is worth checking the weather (weather) before going to Neusiedler See or any other lake, as well as its tiefe (maximum depth) and Wasserstand (water level). Some large lakes even have a lighthouse, although this is more typical of the coast. It is interesting to note that names such as Neusiedler See have their own specific pronunciation. A completely different type of reservoir, known for its natural phenomenon, is Lake Nyos, located in Cameroon. In 1986, this lake was the site of a tragic disaster when suddenly released gases (gas laws play a key role here) caused the deaths of many people (deaths) in the area. This tragedy demonstrated the potential danger of volcanic lakes. Survivors (survivors) of the Lake Nyos disaster tell harrowing stories. Numerous photos and pictures documenting the aftermath of the event are available, as well as video and film. You can find information about the Lake Nyos location and see what it looks like today, many years before and after the disaster.

Returning to Polish soil, apart from Lake Nyos and Lake Otmuchowskie, there are hundreds of other lakes in Poland, such as the aforementioned Lake Strykowskie.
