From a distance, even before you step inside, the building of the Koziołek Matołek European Fairy Tale Centre in Pacanów is, quite simply, impressive! The whole complex reminds me a bit of several huge sandcastles placed next to each other, which immediately, yes, immediately brings associations with playfulness, with carefree fun. Meeting the architectural requirements of this unconventional design was reportedly a significant technical challenge, but thanks to the use of modern construction technologies, they managed to create a building that is both functional and, most importantly, aesthetically captivating. Honestly, a cracking good job! Yes, during the construction of the European Fairy Tale Centre, as I learned, attention was also paid to ecological aspects and, increasingly importantly, sustainable development. Although the specific solutions might, perhaps, not be visible at first glance to the average visitor, care for the natural environment was, as was emphasised, an important element of the entire concept.

Interestingly, in the Centre’s surroundings, you’ll find an ecological educational garden, which wonderfully highlights this connection with nature and its, it must be said, important role in fairy tales. The Museum of Fairy Tale Characters – the meeting we’ve been waiting for!

The Museum of Fairy Tale Characters is naturally located within the European Fairy Tale Centre and is, in my opinion, a key area where children have that fantastic opportunity to meet their beloved heroes. Here, you can, yes, meet a great many characters who will certainly take you on a fairy tale journey – from Tinkerbell, through Little Red Riding Hood, right up to Snow White herself and, of course, the indispensable Koziołek Matołek.

This is precisely the place where children can see iconic animations, including those their parents remember from the communist era, and learn, which is also very valuable, more about the rich history of Polish children’s literature. In fact, looking at it from another perspective, it’s like a living history lesson in literature, presented in an incredibly accessible way.

At Koziołek Matołek’s Enchanted Station, I remember, children searched for the dwelling places of various fairy tale creatures on an interactive map of Europe, thus discovering that fairy tales are, fundamentally, universal and present across the entire continent.

A journey on the Enchanted Train, in turn, allows you to meet gnomes, The Little Prince, the Moomins, and many other fairy tale characters, leading us directly to the Magical Garden, where among the magical plants, you could, for example, search for the sleeping Thumbelina. The Polish Fairy Tale Zone gives you a chance to show off your knowledge of native stories, and in the Treasury of Fairy Tales, hidden in glass spheres, you can, with fascination, watch scenes from various tales.

In the Small Theatre, which, incidentally, is located in the same building as the main exhibition, preschoolers and other school or organised groups can watch, which is also a fantastic option, various performances – for example, „Bajka o syrence” or other puppet theatre shows such as „Mała Syrenka”, „Dziadek do orzechów”, or, a classic, „Krawiec Niteczka”. There’s so much happening here, it’s simply mind-boggling!

The Academy of Fairy Tales – Learning That Is (Truly!) a Pleasure

Beyond the main building of the European Fairy Tale Centre extends, oh yes, extends an outdoor educational park called the Academy of Fairy Tales. This is a place whose main mission is probably learning through creative play, constantly referencing the essence of fairy tales and, very importantly, developing imagination and curiosity about the world.

The park has been cleverly divided thematically, organising this vast world of children’s literature according to specific literary genres. Within the Academy of Fairy Tales, there is also a specially prepared playground where children can safely spend time outdoors, enjoying simple yet developing play.

The Academy of Fairy Tales consists, as I’ve already mentioned, of four mutually connected educational gardens. Each of them is dedicated, obviously, to a different literary genre:

• The Legends Garden (where you can hear stories from the Baltic Sea all the way to the Tatra Mountains, including, of course, those wonderful Świętokrzyskie legends)
• The Novels Garden

Visiting these gardens is, frankly, not just a pleasant walk through a beautiful space, but above all, and this is key, a journey through diverse forms of storytelling, teaching children (and adults!) to distinguish and appreciate the richness of children’s and young adult literature.
