Bydgoszcz, a gem on the Brda River: discover its charm

Bydgoszcz lies picturesquely on the Brda River, which for centuries has shaped its character and influenced the city’s development. It is said to have been the presence of water that attracted the characters in the legend of the founding of Bydgoszcz here – Byd and Gost were said to have chosen this place to settle precisely because of the river. And it was thanks to the Brda that Bydgoszcz’s trade could flourish, with the river’s current powering numerous mills. Today, the river is an important part of the urban space, offering many opportunities for active leisure and relaxation.

What is more, the city itself is sometimes referred to as Poland’s Venice from a marketing point of view, which only emphasises its unique aquatic character. As a friend of mine who moved here from southern Poland often says: “Here, water is everywhere and that is beautiful”.

A walk in the Old Town: tenement houses, the market and historic streets

The heart of Bydgoszcz beats in the Old Town. The Old Market Square, laid out as early as 1346 by King Casimir the Great, is the focal point of the area. Here you will find the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom of the Bydgoszcz Land, as well as a charming historic fountain with a sculpture of children playing with a goose.

The townhouses around the market square, largely rebuilt in the 19th century, are stunning in their architecture, which, it must be said, is impressive. Take a walk down Długa Street, where you will find Bydgoskie Autografy (Bydgoszcz Autographs) – the bronze signatures of people of merit to the city, such as Irena Santor or Zbigniew Boniek. This walk will lead you to the orange tram, which seasonally operates as a tourist information point. Also worth seeing in the area is the charming Cieszkowskiego Street, famous for its beautiful townhouses and unusual atmosphere.

Crossing the Old Town Bridge named after Jerzy Sulima-Kamiński over the Brda, you will pass the characteristic Granaries on the Brda – both the Old and the New Glass Granaries, built in the 1990s after the historical ones were destroyed during World War II. You will also see the sculptures of the Three Graces and the famous “Crossing the River” sculpture by Jerzy Kędziora, installed in 2004 to commemorate Poland’s accession to the European Union. On the other side of the bridge, the Mill Island, a real enclave of green full of monuments and places to relax, awaits you.

Bydgoszcz Venice: a romantic cruise and a unique atmosphere

One of the most beautiful corners of Bydgoszcz, often called the Polish Venice due to its location by the water, is the Bydgoszcz Venice. The buildings of the Old Town stretch picturesquely along the Młynówka river. It is a charming place full of tenement houses from the late 19th century. Walking near the Old Town, you will feel a unique atmosphere that, frankly, is enviable.

Bydgoszcz’s Venice has even appeared on screen – in the series “Four Armoured and a Dog” or the children’s film “Magic Tree”. Fans of the latter can look for the Magic Steps between tenements 6a and 7 and the red chair standing by the playground (cool stuff for kids!).

You’ll also find interesting places in Bydgoszcz Venice, such as the Museum of Place (the former Old Ice House) at 14 Poznańska Street, with an exhibition of archival photos of the area. Or the Warzelnia Piwa Bydgoszcz (Beer Museum), where you can learn about the history of Bydgoszcz’s breweries, the tradition of brewing (such as the former Kujawiak beer, now the Bractwo Brewery, produced on the site of the former DAG Fabrik Bromberg) and drink the local beverage. There is also a restaurant serving Polish and Indian cuisine.

Other culinary stops include OSO Restaurant with Armenian-Georgian cuisine and Pierogarnia Stary Młyn offering traditional pierogi and other Polish dishes. The Venice of Bydgoszcz, together with the Lemara Barge, is part of the TeH2O Water Route of Industry and Crafts.

The Lemara barge, moored at Mostowa Street next to the Granaries on the Brda River, is a historic building from 1937. Named after the parents of the first owner, Adolf Schmidt – Leon and Marianne. Taken over by the Germans in 1940, then by the Red Army, it was finally returned to Poland. Today it is a museum of skipper traditions, telling the story of inland shipping and the profession of skipper. Its interiors have been arranged to house the work and life of skippers, and cultural events are also held here. Also nearby is Lloyd’s Palace, the former headquarters of the Lloyd shipping company, an example of 19th century Dutch Mannerism (an architectural curiosity!).

Attractions for lovers of history and culture: museums and monuments in Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz hides many fascinating sights for those who wish to immerse themselves in the past and art. Museums, historic buildings and memorials are waiting to tell you their stories, and there are quite a few of them. You can also visit less typical sites, such as bunkers or the Pesa Bydgoszcz industrial plant, which also have their own history.

Exploseum: the former explosives factory – an explosion of history!

One of the most unusual attractions in Bydgoszcz is the Exploseum, located on the edge of the Bydgoszcz Forest. It is the site of the former German armaments factory DAG (Dynamit Aktien-Gesellschaft), built between 1939 and 1945 for the army of the Third Reich. Today, the Exploseum, which is part of the District Museum in Bydgoszcz, is the only factory of its kind in Europe that has been converted into a museum. What you will see there is truly impressive and at the same time thought-provoking.

The tour leads you through a network of above- and underground tunnels, telling the fascinating story of the production of explosives, from the fate of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, to the workings of the DAG company and the tragic history of forced labour in the factories of the Third Reich. The exhibition is enriched by objects found on the factory site in 2009, such as a Soviet star, elements of weapons and ammunition or laboratory utensils. Remember that admission to the permanent exhibitions is free on Thursdays (always a nice touch for the budget!).

Museum of soap and dirt history: an unusual museum with workshops

As we have already mentioned, the Museum of Soap and the History of Dirt is a real gem among Bydgoszcz’s museums. A private initiative located in the Old Town in Bydgoszcz. The main theme is maintaining hygiene, but the Museum uses soap as a pretext for an extremely interesting story about the history of washing. It is an unusual museum, which, in fact, is hard to find elsewhere.

It also offers soap-making workshops where you can make your own soap. It’s a great attraction for the little ones, but adults also have a great time here, really! The museum is a point on the TeH2O Water Industry and Crafts Trail.

Bydgoszcz Cathedral: Gothic architecture and rich interiors

The oldest building in Bydgoszcz is the Cathedral of St Martin and St Nicholas, or Bydgoszcz Cathedral. This historically most valuable building in the city was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. As you admire its exterior architecture, look out for the eagle that has survived on the facade – a historical reminder.

Inside, the richness of the interior awaits you, with colourful polychrome paintings on the dome of the Chapel of the Holy Cross (dating from 1617) and beautiful blue vaults. Note the valuable paintings of Mary – Our Lady of Beautiful Love from 1467 (founded in gratitude for winning the Thirteen Years’ War against the Teutonic Order) and Our Lady of the Scapular from 1700.

Next to the church you will find the 18th-century monument to Jan Nepomucen and the Monument to the Murdered Lawyers of Bydgoszcz. Across the street is the Museum of the Bydgoszcz Diocese. After your visit to the Bydgoszcz Cathedral you can go for lunch in the area, you will find quite a few places.

The District Museum: an exploration of the history of Bydgoszcz and the region

The District Museum in Bydgoszcz is an impressive institution that consists of nine buildings scattered around the city, offering a variety of exhibitions and displays. Most of the branches are located on Mill Island, which is lined by the Młynówka River. And it is here that the key places for exploring the history of Bydgoszcz and the region are located.

The District Museum is nowadays housed, among other places, in historic granaries on the Brda River, which are also the headquarters of one of the branches. Its permanent exhibitions explore history, art and culture. One exhibition takes a closer look at the architecture of Wolności Square and Gdańska Street. The section on the Bismarck Tower may also be of interest (although the tower itself is no longer there). The museum also has an impressive model of 17th-century Bydgoszcz made by Gracjan Kaja, which shows a city that no longer exists, including Bydgoszcz Castle and the Jesuit Church – a piece of history that comes to life.

European Money Centre: the fascinating world of coins and numismatics

Also on the Mill Island, in the former building of the Bydgoszcz Mint, which used to have the right to mint coins in Bydgoszcz, is the European Money Centre. This centre offers exhibitions on the history of money and the history of Mill Island itself.

One exhibition showcases the Bydgoszcz treasure – jewellery and coins discovered in Bydgoszcz Cathedral in 2018, making this museum a must-see for numismatics and local history enthusiasts. Isn’t it fascinating that such treasures were discovered relatively recently?

Leon Wyczółkowski House: an exhibition of works by the eminent painter

Art lovers should definitely visit the Leon Wyczółkowski House, another branch of the District Museum located on Młyńska Island in the former house of the Rothera Mills official. In accordance with the painter Leon Wyczółkowski’s will, many of his works were donated to Bydgoszcz.

This house houses a permanent exhibition of works and memorabilia of this outstanding Polish painter of the turn of the 19th and 20th century, who towards the end of his life became associated with Pomerania and Wielkopolska, although he lived in Poznań, among other places. Here you will see well-known paintings such as “Ploughing in Ukraine” and “Fishermen”. Wyczółkowski’s art seems to “go beyond” the museum halls, because on the Mill Island you will also find boards with reproductions of his paintings and information about his life and work – a great idea for an open-air gallery.

Modern Art Gallery: contemporary art in historic granaries

On Mill Island, the historic Red Granary houses the Modern Art Gallery – another branch of the Leon Wyczółkowski Museum (District Museum). It is an ideal place for lovers of contemporary art, and the combination of modern exhibitions with the historic architecture of the granary creates a unique atmosphere.

The area is also home to the modern Waterfront Marina, which adds a modern twist to the place, despite its historic surroundings.

Active leisure and relaxation in Bydgoszcz

Bydgoszcz is not only about monuments and museums. The city also offers many opportunities for active leisure and relaxation in nature, especially around the Brda River. If you like to move, this is the place for you.

Myślęcinek: a forest park with many attractions for the whole family

To the north of Bydgoszcz stretches the Forest Park of Culture and Leisure, or Myślęcinek. With an area of over 800 hectares, it is the largest urban park in Poland and a real paradise for everyone. Regardless of age or interests, Myślęcinek offers something for everyone.

You will find here, among others:

• an amusement park with attractions such as an upside-down house, rope park or dinosaur models
• Bydgoszcz Zoo
• Botanical Garden, where you can admire plants from Poland and North America, such as the Canadian Christmas tree or Japanese sofora
• Paleontological Museum
• ski slope and snowtubing track (in winter – you have to admit, it’s interesting in the city!)

Myślęcinek is the perfect place for a whole day of fun and relaxation for the whole family, although if you want to reach all the corners, be prepared for long walks, it really is a huge area.

Cruise the Brda: water tram, cruise ships and canoes

The life of Bydgoszcz is concentrated on the Brda, and a river cruise is one of the biggest tourist attractions. You can take advantage of the Bydgoszcz Water Tram (Sunflower I and Sunflower II), which starts from Rybie Rynek. Different routes are available: the Staromiejska Line, which runs along the Bydgoszcz Cathedral, Opera Nova, Mill Island and the Railway Directorate, and the Sunny Line, passing, among others, the University Route, Sports Facilities and the Hotel Słoneczny Młyn.

There are also cruise ships sailing on the Brda, such as the more than 100-year-old MS Bydgoszcz or the MS Fantasia, which offers 50-60 minute cruises with a guide, telling stories about the Lemara Barge or Bydgoszcz Cathedral, among others. For those who prefer a more active holiday, the Bydgoszcz Harbour offers kayak rental. Kayaking on the Brda is a great way to see the city from a different perspective, although sometimes you have to watch out for larger vessels.

Boulevards on the Brda: stroll along the promenade and enjoy the panorama of the city

The renovated boulevards along the Brda River are some of the most beautiful walking places in the city. They lead to the Central Park on the south bank of the river. As you walk, you can admire the panorama of the city and view the building of the Bydgoszcz Opera House, which is beautifully reflected in the surface of the Brda.

The Central Park offers a picturesque view of the other side of the river, where you will see, among others, the Słoneczny Młyn Hotel in a historic grain mill building from the 19th century. Near the park, you will find interesting murals “Pan Twardowski i spółka” or “Panienki z okienka”, as well as restaurants. This is the perfect place for a quiet evening stroll.

Bydgoszcz’s flavours and culinary pearls

Jatki Street: the culinary heart of the city with a variety of restaurants

If you are looking for a place to eat well in Bydgoszcz, Jatki Street is the true culinary heart of the city. This street, rebuilt in 2013, tempts with a variety of flavours.

You will find here, among others:

• Karafka Winebar & Restaurant with a wide selection of wines
• Shrimp Beastroo, serving prawns in a variety of ways
• King Fu Fushion with Japanese cuisine (sushi)
• Jatki6 Restaurant, where you can enjoy a delicious cooler or tripe made of oyster mushrooms
• The Kitchen Restaurant, recommended for, among other things, pikeperch

This is the ideal place for a stroll combined with a real feast for the palate. Remember, however, that it can get quite crowded at weekends.

Venice of Bydgoszcz: restaurants with traditional and international cuisine

The romantic atmosphere of Bydgoszcz Venice is the perfect backdrop for a meal. Here, the tradition of Bydgoszcz brewing is cultivated at Warzelnia Piwa, where there is also a restaurant with Polish and Indian cuisine. As we have already mentioned, the Venice of Bydgoszcz also tempts with other restaurants, such as OSO Restaurant with Armenian-Georgian cuisine or Pierogarnia Stary Młyn, which will satisfy lovers of pierogi and other traditional Polish dishes. It’s a great place to eat and drink beer with tradition while admiring the charming townhouses on the Młynówka River.

Młyny Rothera: cafés and restaurants in a historic complex

The Rothera Mills complex, an important landmark on Mill Island and the TeH2O Route, is not just about museums and exhibitions. In the historic interiors, you will also find cafés and restaurants that allow you to stop for a moment of relaxation and a meal in a unique atmosphere.

It’s the perfect stop after visiting the numerous exhibitions on Bydgoszcz’s industrial history, water and crafts, or just a stroll around the Mill Island. Prices may be slightly higher, but the location alone is worth considering.

Bydgoszcz – not just the centre: discover the surrounding attractions

Although the centre of Bydgoszcz is full of attractions, it is worth going a little beyond to discover more of the region’s gems. Some of the points of interest on the TeH2O Route of Industry and Crafts, such as the Exploseum or the Palace and Park Complex in Ostromecko, are a bit far from the centre, but definitely worth a look.

Ostromecko Palace: a historic palace and park complex

Just a dozen or so kilometres from the centre of Bydgoszcz, in the village of Ostromecko, there is a beautiful Palace and Park Complex. It is a place open all year round, with free admission to the extensive park and paid admission to the palaces. You will see two palaces here: the Baroque Old Palace from the 18th century, which includes a charming Italian garden with a rosarium and fountain, and the New Palace from the 19th century.

In the New Palace, you will find permanent exhibitions, e.g. dedicated to instruments (a collection of instruments from the Bydgoszcz Accordion Factory, including the unique Carmen accordion) and an interesting exhibition for the youngest, “Huhuczny loft” with owl figurines. In the Palace Dining Rooms there is a restaurant serving dishes based on historical local recipes. Both palaces are surrounded by an extensive park with around 4,500 trees, including 60 natural monuments.

This is an ideal place for a longer trip and relaxation among the greenery. You can reach it by crossing the bridge named after Rudolf Mierzejewski from Stary Fordon, a settlement in eastern Bydgoszcz, a former town of three cultures (Catholic, Evangelical, Jewish) whose inhabitants resettled here in the 14th century from Wyszogród. In Old Fordon, it is worth seeing the market square with a multimedia fountain, historic townhouses, the magnificent Penitentiary Institution decorated with murals of the “Gate” and “founding inhabitants”, the church dedicated to St. Nicholas from the 20th century (which has a chapel from the 16th century), the neo-Gothic church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist with paintings by Władysław Burchardt, the Old Synagogue (now a cultural facility, converted by the Germans in 1939. into a cinema theatre) with a 19th-century city pump next to it, as well as the Vistula boulevards on the Vistula and the installation “Returns” by Ewa Raczyńska-Mąkowska with archival photographs of local residents. Truly, a piece of history in one place.

Practical information for tourists

When planning a trip to Bydgoszcz, it’s worth knowing a few practical things that will make your visit and stay in the city easier. It always helps, doesn’t it?

Bydgoszcz Tourist Card: discounts and facilities for visitors

Bydgoszcz offers the Bydgoszcz Tourist Card, which is the perfect solution for those wishing to take advantage of its many attractions. The card provides cheaper entrance fees to many places (e.g. the Museum of Soap and the History of Dirt, which is a point on the TeH2O Water Industry and Craft Trail), as well as discounts on accommodation, restaurants or performances.

The document even entitles you to a free ride on the Sunflower water tram. It’s a great way to save money and get around the city comfortably, especially if you’re planning intensive sightseeing. It’s worth checking the opening hours of the places you’re interested in before you visit. Consider whether this is a viable option for you.

Getting to Bydgoszcz: train, bus, car

Bydgoszcz is quite well connected with major cities in Poland. There are direct trains from Wrocław, Krakow, Poznań, Łódź, Lublin, Gdynia, Warsaw, Katowice and Toruń, among others.

You can also get there by bus from, for example, Grudziądz, Władysławowo, Koszalin, Ustka, Słupsk, Płock or Ciechocinek. We used a car for the trip, which gave us independence and allowed us to visit not only Bydgoszcz, but also the Kociewie region and drive through Bory Tucholskie and Kaszuby (beautiful area!). Driving from Chełmno, you have to cover about 15 km to the city centre. The choice of means of transport depends, of course, on your preferences and the place from which you start your trip; each option has its pros and cons.

Accommodation in Bydgoszcz: hotels, hostels, flats

Bydgoszcz has a wide range of accommodation, so there is something for everyone, regardless of budget. In the Old Town and Downtown, where you’ll find most of the main attractions, there are both hotels (such as the 4-star Focus Hotel Premium Bydgoszcz, located 700 metres from the Market Square, or Hotel Słoneczny Młyn, which you pass while cruising along the Słoneczna River) and hostels (such as the budget Hostel SMS offering free Wi-Fi and parking), as well as flats for rent (such as Apartamenty Akademicka at Onkologia 3, equipped with air conditioning, oven, washing machine).

Our flat on Gimnazjalna Street, close to the centre, turned out to be a hit; after all, as a traveller friend of mine says, “a good location is half the battle”. The city offers flats, hostels, hotels and private accommodation, so you are sure to find the perfect place to rest after a day full of sightseeing.

Travelling around Bydgoszcz – a plan for an unforgettable experience

Bydgoszcz is a city that, believe me, really has a lot to offer. It’s a place where history meets modernity and life moves to the rhythm of the Brda River. You will see beautiful, historic buildings here (especially in the Old Town and the city centre), charming places that can enchant. There is a wonderful panorama of Bydgoszcz from many vantage points in the city, as well as from the Pressure Tower.

The city prides itself on hosting excellent sporting events, and the Brda River is the arena for many competitions, such as open water competitions (in which Kasia, our travelling companion, took part in the Bydgoszcz Water Plunge!). Bydgoszcz is also a good place for nature lovers – you will find many parks, including the largest city park in Poland, Myślęcinek, with its botanical garden (in spring the weather is good, flowers are blooming in the Botanical Garden and parks, a sight not to be forgotten).

Music fans can stroll through the Music Quarter (here you will find, among other things, the Pomeranian Philharmonic known for its great acoustics and the Opera Nova) and go to a concert or performance (in spring, the Bydgoszcz Opera House hosts the Bydgoszcz Opera Festival held in April and May). You can also visit the Minor Basilica of Saint Vincent à Paulo, the largest church in Bydgoszcz (modelled on the Roman Pantheon and featuring the Door of Beatitude), or the Church of Saints Peter and Paul at Plac Wolności (built between 1872 and 1878, combining neo-Gothic, Romanesque and neo-Baroque styles, featuring an organ from 1877 and polychrome from 1957, and on top of which a kestrel, an endangered species in Europe, has its nest) are places to visit if you are interested in sacred art, although if you are not fond of churches, you can skip them.

Don’t forget unusual museums such as the Museum of Soap and the History of Dirt, the Museum of Waterworks, or the industrial gems of the TeH2O Water Industry and Crafts Route, such as the Exploseum (former explosives factory D.A.G. Fabrik Bromberg) or the Bydgoszcz Canal Museum (presenting the history of the canal, crucial to the city’s development, and featuring a rowing boat from the 20th century and the “Four Armoured and a Dog” trail, filmed in Kłodzko, Olsztyn and on the Vistula Spit, which, actually, is a bit different from Bydgoszcz history, but is a curiosity). Archaeological collections presenting the ancient history of the region can be found in the branches of the District Museum or in other establishments.

The entire collection is complemented by numerous murals (e.g. murals of Marian Rejewski, “Café”, “Breakfast of the Masters”, “Self-definition”, “Peter Pan” – the largest in Poland, “Ptasiek”, “Silence”) and sculptures (e.g. “The Archer in Jan Kochanowski Park”, “The Archer in Jan Kochanowski Park”). The Archer in Jan Kochanowski Park, the Freedom Monument at Freedom Square, Jerzy Kędziora’s balancing sculptures – Charlie Chaplin, the Canoeist on the Brda River, the 18th Meridian Monument at the White Granary, the Monument to the Murdered Lawyers of Bydgoszcz at the Cathedral, Zygmunt Mackiewicz’s bench in Kazimierz Wielki Park).
