June 23, 2025
We would like to invite you, dear lovers of mountain hiking, for a peculiar journey to the heart of the Bieszczady Mountains. This is a truly unique place, shrouded in a kind of fog of legend and, without a doubt, smelling of berries. Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is much more than just a hostel – it is a true oasis for anyone wandering on the trails, a space where the effort of climbing is rewarded not only by spectacular views that take your breath away, but also by a very warm, human atmosphere and flavours that you will not find elsewhere. If you are planning a trip to these, still wild, eastern regions of Poland, this guide will serve as a signpost, helping you discover all the secrets of this charming nook just below the peak of Mala Rawka. So get ready for some practical advice, tales of local specialities and, of course, a handful of inspirations for your further wanderings, perhaps supported by some beautiful photographs from this magical place.
Attractions and facilities of the shepherd’s hut

The Shepherd’s Hut below Malá Rawka is an attraction in itself, isn’t it? It was built according to that distinctive PTTK shepherd’s hut concept, which was designed by Edward Moskał. It is one of eleven such gems to be found in the Polish mountains, giving tourists a sense of comfort and much-needed respite after the hardships of the road. Run by seemingly extremely friendly hosts, it makes you want to return to it as if it were your favourite home – a place that is kind and simply friendly. What’s more, you can spread out on the grass right next to the chalet, make use of the wooden benches or tables, and contemplate the stunning nature that surrounds you from all sides. Inside, you will also find the Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service (GOPR) rescue point, which adds a certain sense of security that cannot be underestimated in the mountains.
Blueberry pancakes – a regional flavour of the Bieszczady mountains
Ah, those famous pancakes! If only the Bieszczady Mountains and blueberry pancakes make an inseparable pair for you, then Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is undoubtedly one of the places where this regional delicacy tastes truly outstanding. It is safe to say that the hostel serves one of the best blueberry pancakes you will find in the entire Bieszczady Mountains. This dish, although simple, has almost become a symbol of these mountains. So a visit to a shepherd’s hut without trying the Pancake Giant (this legendary and patented dessert, which you can also taste in Wetlin) is, if I’m honest, a downright tourist sin! It is the perfect reward after conquering the summit of Mala Rawka, or that “bigger sister” – Wielka Rawka.
Shepherd’s hut facilities: comfort and convenience for tourists?
The PTTK shelter under Mala Rawka provides hikers with these most basic comforts, which are, after all, essential for a somewhat comfortable stay in the mountains. For, although it is a hostel and not a luxury hotel (which is probably obvious, but worth emphasising), you will find here everything you need to regenerate after a day’s walk. There are places to sleep, hot meals to fortify you and drinks to quench your thirst, and, of course, those aforementioned corners to relax outdoors. The facilities are tailored to the needs of hikers, who usually appreciate simplicity and that unique mountain atmosphere. Although, on the other hand, some would probably prefer a bathroom in the room, but then would it still be the same atmosphere?
Attractions around the shepherd’s hut: hiking trails and beautiful views
The very location of the shepherd’s hut, at the foot of Mala Rawka, is a real hit with anyone who loves mountain hiking. You can enjoy a magnificent panorama from here. After all, you are in the heart of the Bieszczady National Park, and this in itself is a guarantee of close contact with wildlife and landscapes that can really move and delight. In the immediate vicinity of the shepherd’s hut you will find plenty of trails leading to the nearby peaks and offering unforgettable views of the surroundings. And how many of these trails can you walk from one place? Quite a few.
Access and location

Getting to Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is, shall we say, relatively easy, although it does require setting out into the middle of the Bieszczady Mountains. The hostel itself is located at a convenient distance from Wetlina and Ustrzyki Górne, the two main Bieszczady towns. Usually, the shortest and most popular route leads from the Vyšniańska Pass.
How to get to Bacówka pod Małą Rawką: map and directions
To get to Bacówka pod Małą Rawką, it is best to head for the Vyšniańska Pass. It is located in the Bieszczady Mountains, near the village of Brzegi Górne. You can easily find the car park by typing in your navigation either “Bacówka pod Małą Rawką” or simply “Przełęcz Wyżniańska”. Interestingly, the buses running on the route Wetlina – Ustrzyki Górne stop at the Wyżniańska Pass, which is quite a convenient option if you prefer public transport. And yes, from the Pass you already have a short walk uphill to the shepherd’s hut.
Parking at the shepherd’s hut: practical information
A large car park is located near the Vyšniańska Mountain Pass, from where the main trail to the shepherd’s hut starts. It is a convenient solution, especially for those who travel to the Bieszczady Mountains by car. The car park is not only for those heading for the shepherd’s hut, but also for walkers going to Połonina Wetlińska or Połonina Caryńska. By the way, at the same car park, there is also a point where entry fees to the Bieszczady National Park (BdPN) are collected. Remember, it is worth knowing that families with a nationwide Large Family Card have free entry. Oh, and an important note for those who forget about such things (like me sometimes!) – in the border areas of the Bieszczady, due to the proximity of the border, it is a good idea to disable data roaming in your phone or manually block the automatic selection of the operator, so that you are not surprised by the bill for calls to foreign networks.
The best travel routes from different locations
Well, depending on where exactly you are setting off from, the access routes to the Bieszczady, and specifically to the Vyšniańska Pass, will obviously be different. If you are driving from larger Polish cities, it is usually best to head first towards Sanok or Lesko, and from there on towards Ustrzyki Górne or Wetlina. And it is from both of these towns that it is relatively easy to get to the Wyżniańska Pass mentioned above, from where this green trail leads straight to the mountain shelter below Rawki. Keep in mind, however, that the Bieszczady is the easternmost Polish mountain range, so the journey, especially from the north or west of the country, may take at least a few good hours. So, it is worth taking this into account in your planning.
Hiking trails in the area

The area around Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is a veritable paradise for any hiking enthusiast. You are right in the centre of a network of trails that lead to some of the most beautiful Bieszczady Poloniny. From the hostel, you have the possibility to set off on hikes to, for example, Mt Wielka Rawka, Mała Rawka, Rabia Skała or Dwernik Kamień. You can also go, for example, to Wetlina, going through Dział, or descend to the Caryński Valley, or even reach the Koliba mountain hostel on Przysłop Caryński, which, by the way, was also built according to Edward Moskała’s conception. We ourselves, when planning our last outing, hesitated a bit between Połonina Wetlińska and Rawka, but finally chose the latter, and we do not regret it.
The trail to Mala Rawka: route description and difficulty
Perhaps the best known and most frequented trail leading to the Mala Rawka mountain hut is the one marked in green, starting from the Wyżniańska Pass. It is a route that is relatively short and, importantly, not very demanding, almost ideal for such a warm-up before more serious approaches, or simply for a hike with younger family members, even children. Many rankings of the easiest mountain trails often place this route quite high, as a great option for those first mountain steps with a toddler. And interestingly enough, the nature trail of the Bieszczady National Park “Wielka Rawka” also runs along this route, which you will recognise by the symbol of the rowan tree. It is also worth mentioning that the road itself from the Vyšniańska Pass to Bacówka pod Malą Rawką underwent renovation in 2024, which really improved the comfort of the walk. And, what is important for many, since 2023 the section from the Vyšniańska Pass to Bacówka pod Małą Rawką can be overcome in the company of a dog. However, you must remember that on the further section, i.e. from Bacówka to Mała Rawka, the ban on introducing dogs is unfortunately already in force. You should always check the exact details in the official BdPN Rules and Regulations. From the Vyšniańska Pass you also have, of course, that steep climb to Połonina Caryńska, but the route to Rawka, leading through the mountain shelter, is definitely gentler.
The route to Mt Wielka Rawka: map and directions
From the mountain hut below Mt Mala Rawka you can continue your hike to Mt Wielka Rawka – the ‘older sister’ of Mt Mala Rawka, as we mentioned. The route to Mt Wielka Rawka also starts on the Vyšniańska Pass and goes right through Bacówka, so it is a natural extension of the trip. Although it is a slightly steeper and more demanding ascent, the views from the top are, I can guarantee you, absolutely stunning. From Wielka Rawka you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the so-called Bieszczady Sack, including such characteristic peaks as Bukowe Berdo, Krzemień, Szeroki Wierch along with the famous Tarnica, which is the highest peak of the Polish Bieszczady Mountains. Moreover, if you have strength and time, you can extend the trip and reach the famous tri-junction of the Polish, Slovak and Ukrainian borders at Krzemieniec. Views from the trail also include other well-known Poloniny, such as Połonina Caryńska and Połonina Wetlińska, which makes the road an attraction in itself.
Other nearby hiking trails: suggestions for different levels of experience
In addition to conquering the Rawki, the Bieszczady National Park and its surroundings offer a whole host of other hiking opportunities. In fact, from Bacówka pod Małą Rawką you have access to a really extensive network of Bieszczady trails. If you’re looking for something different, you can take trails that take you to other mountain pastures or venture into those wilder, less frequented corners. For example, you can plan a trip to Slovakia, to Nova Sedlica, to Rabia Skała, return to Wetlina going through Dział, conquer Dwernik Kamień, descend to Caryński Valley, or visit Koliba mountain hostel on Przysłop Caryński. As you can see, there are many options and everyone, regardless of their level of experience – be it a beginner looking for an easy walk or an experienced tourist planning a demanding day-long expedition – will find something for themselves. Because the Bieszczady Mountains have paths for everyone, you just have to be willing to discover them.
Gastronomy in a shepherd’s hut

After all the effort on the trail, after hours of walking, nothing tastes and regenerates like a solid, hot meal and a refreshing drink, right? The catering at Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is, in my opinion, a very important part of the whole Bieszczady experience. As you already know, the hostel is primarily famous for its legendary blueberry pancakes, but their menu is thankfully not limited to just that. Apart from it, you can also expect other dishes typical of mountain hostels and the region. Although Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is not directly famous for producing sheep’s cheese like some other Bieszczady mountain huts, such as the one in Jaworc, you can sometimes buy local products here, including delicious oscypek. You can often find such classics as bigos, goulash pancakes or various types of pierogi. It’s always worth asking the staff about the current specials of the day, as you can sometimes come across something really delicious. As someone who blogs a bit about travel, I can confirm that mountain huts can sometimes surprise you with a taste that is reminiscent of real home cooking, and this is probably the coolest thing about it.
Drinks in a shepherd’s hut: a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
In addition to the standard non-alcoholic drinks, from water to tea with lemon (which tastes best in the mountains, doesn’t it?), Bacówka pod Małą Rawką has its own speciality when it comes to mulled beer. I remember once trying what I think they called ‘a special kind of mulled beer’ there – and indeed, it had character. It’s almost the perfect place for an evening chat over something warm, especially after a day on the trail on a colder day. Or you can, you know, just relax with a beer, even if you don’t feel like socialising extensively with a large group of tourists, although, you know, the atmosphere in a shepherd’s hut is usually good for making new friends. We once had the opportunity to try a couple of beers there that really surprised us, I remember, for example, one with such a pleasant grapefruit aftertaste, or some rye IPA with noticeable notes of mango and passion fruit… or a stout with aromas of dark chocolate… I mean, you know, these flavours are so varied. There was also something with bananas, well, and classic beers with notes of caramel or the more heavily hopped Red AIPA. I also remember a BIPA and one perfectly balanced, bitter, comparable to a hop attack, but one that combined drinkability with character. Although, I have to admit, sometimes these Polish porters, even though they can be solid, in a clash with some other styles, can score such a, you know, “KO”, especially when you come across a beer with that perfect smoothness, fullness of flavour, with an aroma of dark fruits and nuts that even hits the nostrils. Well, but that’s a beer digression (laughs). In any case, a beer in a place like this is always ideal – whether for conversation or playing some board game, like Magic and Sword used to be.
Table reservations: how do you book a seat at the shepherd’s hut?
The shepherd’s hut below Mala Rawka, like popular places in the mountains, is sometimes besieged, especially during the high season. Although, to be honest, shepherd’s huts don’t usually book individual tables in the dining room – it’s not a restaurant – it’s always worth checking their specific procedures, especially if you plan to arrive in a large group or at the weekend when tourist traffic is at its heaviest. More often than not, the first-come, first-served rule simply works, meaning that you take a vacant seat at a table. But there is nothing to stop you simply asking directly at the shepherd’s hut for all the details about meals or dining space.
Accommodation in a shepherd’s hut
Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is first and foremost a mountain hostel, and its main function is of course to provide accommodation for hikers. It’s safe to say that this is one of the best places to stay in the Bieszczady Mountains if you want to stay literally in the heart of the mountains, right next to the most important trails. Because location is probably the key, right?
Types of rooms and accommodation in the shepherd’s hut
In the shelter below Mala Rawka you will find standard, typical shelter conditions. What does this mean exactly? There are usually dormitory rooms with bunk beds. In my opinion, this is an ideal place to stay for hikers who appreciate that specific mountain atmosphere and enjoy evenings spent with other hikers, perhaps by the fireplace if it happens to be available and working. But remember, the exact configuration of rooms and the number of places available may vary, so it is always best to check the current information directly at the source, i.e. at the shepherd’s hut itself.
Prices for accommodation in a shepherd’s hut: current price list
Prices for accommodation in PTTK chalets are generally affordable and should not ruin your budget. However, in order to find out this most up-to-date price list valid at Bacówka pod Małą Rawką, it is best to contact the hostel staff directly. Prices may vary depending on the season (as you know, the season has its own rules), the type of room (if there are different standards) and, of course, the length of your stay. And remember that a night in a hostel is not just a roof over your head, but also a great opportunity to meet other mountain lovers with whom you can exchange experiences or just chat. This is an added value that you don’t get in a hotel.
Booking accommodation: information and contact
If you want to book a place to stay at Bacówka pod Małą Rawką, the easiest and surest way is to contact the hostel directly. You can get all the necessary information on availability of places, as well as details on the booking process itself, by calling or writing an e-mail to the contact they provide. The contact details of a shepherd’s hut are absolutely crucial when planning an overnight stay, so it’s worth keeping them to hand. It’s also worth checking their official website or Facebook profile, where they often post up-to-date information. And a piece of advice from experience: it is worth booking places well in advance, especially if you are going to the Bieszczady Mountains during the peak tourist season, when people are, let’s face it, massively present on all the popular trails.
Practical information for tourists
Hiking in the Bieszczady Mountains, while beautiful, requires some preparation. Here are some practical tips to take to heart before setting off on a trail, whether it’s to Bacówka pod Małą Rawką or further into those higher parts of the mountains. Better to be prepared, right?
Safety in the mountains: tips and recommendations
The Bieszczady Mountains are undoubtedly beautiful, but they can also be, needless to say, demanding. Especially in winter, when they become, as they say, “hostile and treacherous”. Always, absolutely always, check the current weather forecast before every time you go out on a trail. In the mountains, it’s easy to have a moment of inattention, lose your way or, worse, get injured. Therefore, it is good practice to inform someone (family, friends or even the mountain hut staff) of your planned route and estimated time of return. The aforementioned GOPR rescue point in the mountain shelter below Mala Rawka is of course a big plus, giving you the feeling that help is close by, but remember – the best form of safety is simply your own caution and solid preparation, and proper clothing and equipment is an absolute must, no question.
Weather conditions in the Bieszczady: forecasts and tips
Weather in the mountains, as it is in the mountains, can change in the blink of an eye, and very dynamically. During holidays or long weekends, the Bieszczady can be as packed with tourists as any other popular mountain in Poland, but even then the weather can be, to put it mildly, capricious. In winter, on the other hand, deep snowdrifts and really low temperatures are the norm rather than the exception. So always, and I stress always, check the latest weather forecast before setting off on a trail and be ready for sudden changes in conditions – have an extra layer of clothing, hat, gloves, NRC foil in your rucksack. Apparently there is a camera somewhere online on Mala Rawka, if it works it can give you a quick overview of the current conditions in the summit area, although the forecast is a must anyway.
Contacting the shepherd’s hut: phone number and email address
If you want to get the most reliable and up-to-date information about Bacówka pod Małą Rawką, the best and in fact the only way is to contact it directly. The phone number and e-mail address of the mountain shelter are your key tools. Thanks to them, you can ask about everything: the current price list, availability of accommodation, current conditions on the trails, and even what’s on the menu. Remember, however, that in the mountains, especially in the Bieszczady, mobile phone coverage can be, to put it mildly, limited, so sometimes the only way is to send an e-mail or wait patiently for a connection. But it is worth trying!
History and interesting facts about the shepherd’s hut
Bacówka pod Małą Rawką has its own, quite rich history, which is an inseparable part of the history of Bieszczady tourism. It is not just an ordinary building, no – it is a place imbued with the stories of all those hikers who have crossed its threshold over the years, and of course the local legends that circulate in the Bieszczady Mountains. From the moment it was built, for many years, it invariably fulfilled its role as a starting point or destination for hikes to the Rawki and other nearby peaks. It has hosted literally thousands of tourists, becoming for many a place with a huge, sentimental emotional charge. This is evidenced by the many positive comments left by visitors. Apparently, Władysław Nadopta, a well-known figure associated with the Bieszczady, often visited the place. And the shelter itself, run by very nice people, has its faithful companion – a huge but supposedly very friendly dog named San. After all, as my guide friend says, “Bieszczady is not only mountains, it is also people and their stories… and the dogs that accompany them!”.
Interesting facts about the shepherd’s hut and its surroundings
The surroundings of Bacówka pod Małą Rawką hide a lot of, often little-known curiosities. Although the Bieszczady, especially for people from outside the region, are mainly associated with wild animals such as wolves, lynxes or bison, during the tourist season, and especially in high season, these mountains can be just as (or maybe even more?) filled with people as any other popular range. Although you can usually find real crowds in the Bieszczady Mountains, it is always possible, if you wish, to find quiet, secluded corners where you can be alone with nature. I also heard that some Magdalena is collecting material for a book, perhaps inspired by all these stories and anecdotes related to this place. And as for the geography, did you know that this Prowcza (or Prowsija) Stream, which in its upper reaches is called Prowcza, eventually flows into the San? And best of all, below Brzegi Górne the same stream changes its name to Nasichansky, to be called Dwernik at the very mouth (another name is Bereżanka)? This shows how rich and sometimes, I won’t say, confusing the geographical nomenclature of this region is, which also adds to its charm.
Legends and stories connected with Mala and Wielka Rawka
Like almost every place in the Bieszczady Mountains, Mala Rawka and Wielka Rawka have their own legends and stories that are passed down from generation to generation. Although these more detailed stories often live mainly in oral tradition and are difficult to find in written form, the names of the peaks themselves and the trails associated with them undoubtedly stimulate the imagination. These mountains, with their vast expanses, have witnessed countless events and human destinies, which adds a note of mystery and unique charm. Can the mountains speak? Maybe not directly, but everyone who has hiked in the Bieszczady Mountains at least once is sure to have their own personal stories and memories associated with these magical places, which create their own legend of the Bieszczady Mountains.
What is worth knowing about Bacówka pod Małą Rawką?
Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is simply an iconic place on the Bieszczady map, picturesquely located just below the peak of Mt Mała Rawka. It is a genuine PTTK (Polish Tourist Country-Lovers’ Society) hut, which offers hikers the most important things: safe shelter, tasty gastronomy (with those famous blueberry pancakes at the top, of course) and that special, unique atmosphere of a mountain hut. It makes an excellent base for hiking both the nearby Rawki Mountains and other numerous Bieszczady trails, including those that run through areas of the Bieszczady National Park. The easiest way to get there is to start from the Wyżniańska Pass, where there is a convenient car park and a point where you can pay the entrance fee to the national park. Remember to always check the weather forecast before you set off, take care of your own safety in the mountains, and if you plan to stay overnight, it is worth thinking about booking a place well in advance, especially on the most popular dates. Whether you are dropping in for just a day or planning a longer stay, Bacówka pod Małą Rawką is sure to enchant you and, I am sure, will remain in your memory as one of those most pleasant Bieszczady experiences. It is the kind of place you simply want to return to, a little bit sentimental, a little bit longing for its simplicity and beauty.
