Peaks along the route, such as Pocak (906 m above sea level), Dział (906 m above sea level), Berest (942 m above sea level), Osina (963 m above sea level), and Hon itself (820 m above sea level), also offer beautiful views and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. This is a popular ascent, although the trail to the summit of Wołosań is one of the less frequented mountain routes, which is actually a plus, isn’t it? From here, you can also reach Jaworne (992 m above sea level) or Chryszczata (997 m above sea level). For long-distance hikers, Bacówka pod Honem near Cisna is an important point on the GSB. Many hikers, like us (Iwona and I) or Rafał and his group whom we met, pass through the bacówka when tackling subsequent stages of the trail, for example going from Komańcza (where the PTTK Ignacy Zatwarnicki Forest Villa and K85 base are located, though it’s best to check the current status of places yourself) towards Smerek or Połonina Wetlińska. The route from Duszatyń to Prełuki, and then towards the hostel, leads along the Olchowaty stream, through areas with interesting history and nature. Although that tarmac section can be a real slog after a full day’s walk.

The trails around the bacówka have a varied level of difficulty. The ascent to Wołosań, Jaworne, or Chryszczata requires a certain level of fitness, but that’s why we go to the mountains to get tired, don’t we? The red GSB trail route from Komańcza to Bacówka pod Honem / Cisna passes many peaks, including Chryszczata (998 m), Pocak (906 m), Dział (906 m), Jaworne (992 m), Berest (942 m), Osina (963 m), and Hon (820 m), offering both gentle sections and more demanding ascents. We even met Grzesiek, who was hanging around the trail, looking for good shots, which attests to the picturesque nature of the routes, and also to the fact that you can always find someone interesting on the trail. The walk along the Olchowaty stream to the Duszatyńskie Lakes is charming, although crossing the stream might require caution, as the stones can be slippery. Remember that from the Duszatyńskie Lakes to Chryszczata is about an hour’s walk, and from Żebrak Pass to the hostel, I had 4.5 hours (12.5 kilometres) of walking left, but the times on the map are one thing, and reality is another. It’s a very varied and interesting route, even if you sometimes get the “2km syndrome” on the straight sections.

Setting off on the trail from Bacówka pod Honem, just like on any mountain trip, you should prepare properly. Walking along the Olchowaty stream, we pass boards warning about bears, and wolf tracks in the mud remind you of the wild nature of the Bieszczady, and although encountering a bear on the trail, as happened to my cousin, is rare (thankfully!), the presence of these animals adds wildness to the Bieszczady, but also requires caution. It’s worth being aware of the presence of wild animals and exercising caution, and even talking louder so as not to surprise them. At Żebrak Pass, where we took a longer break, it was nice to rest, but remember that every break extends the time it takes to reach your destination, and dusk in the mountains can be quick. Even if the “2km syndrome” kicks in, meaning boredom on straight sections, don’t lose vigilance. Always be aware of trail conditions – mud, slippery stones, or streams to cross (you often cross a stream when going to the lakes, and it can get wet). Remember that the mountains demand respect and prudence, and carelessness can cost you.

A stay at the bacówka is often a time for rest, regeneration, and admiring the beautiful views, like sunrise at 4 am (if you manage to get up). Even difficulties on the trail or aching feet that made me want to drown my boots in the Osława, become part of the memories we talk about later with a smile, don’t we?
